Zendan-e zanan (Women's Prison) (2002) - Manijeh Hekmat

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0332834/

Country: Iran
Language: Persian

Spanning 18 years in an Iranian women's prison, this follows two women: the new prison warden, a tough as nails devout Muslim who has served in the army on the Iraqi front, and a young midwife, Mitra, who is serving her sentence for killing her mother's abusive husband. In the early years, Mitra is repeatedly punished as the warden tries to break her. This includes punishment for delivering a baby in the prison cell while all of the prison staff has taken shelter during an Iraqi bombing. The warden's attitude starts to change after 8 years, when Mitra tries to protect a new inmate from rape at the hands of her older cellmates. When the baby comes back in 1991 as a 17 year old delinquent, Sepideh, the warden respects Mitra enough to protect the girl.

Frontier Blues (2009) - Babak Jalali

Country; Iran
Language: Persian

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1483373/

FRONTIER BLUES is the debut feature film written and directed by the Iranian born Babak Jalali, presented as a world première in August 2009 at the 62nd Locarno International Film Festival.

FRONTIER BLUES features 4 intertwined stories all set in Iran's northern frontier with Turkmenistan, a region that has long been neglected in Iranian cinema, interesting not only for its magnificent, forlorn landscape but also for its multi-ethnic population of Persians, Turkmens and Kazakhs.

This film looks at fragments from the everyday existence of several characters that reside in this region. It was written based on what I saw, what I heard and what I did. It’s about the Northern Iranian Frontier. It’s the story of longing, waiting, remembering, desperate men and absent women. It’s about not quite getting there. Wherever that may be… said the director who was born there.

Alam is a 28 year-old Turkmen man who lives with his father and works on a chicken farm. He is teaching himself English in order to marry a girl called Ana and take her to Baku. Hassan is a 28 year-old Persian man who lives with his uncle. His only companions are his pet donkey and a tape player. Kazem, Hassan’s uncle, owns a clothing store but the clothes he tries to sell never seem to fit anyone. A 55 year-old Turkmen minstrel is the subject of a book of photography by a photographer from Tehran. His wife was kidnapped by a shepherd in a green Mercedes many years ago.

FRONTIER BLUES features non-professional actors from Golestan, the Northern region of Iran, where the film was shot.

Shayad Vaghti Deegar (Perhaps Some Other Time) (1988) - Bahram Beizai

Country: Iran
Language: Persian

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096092

Bahram Beyzai (Director, Producer, Screen-writer and Editor) was born in Tehran, Iran on 26 December 1938. He was introduced to the world of art when he was still very young. In high school he wrote two historical plays which eventually became his preferred method of writing. He then entered University of Tehran, but did not finish his studies due to lack of interest in the subject he was studying.

It was then that he started researching Iranian theatre and epic literature. At the age of 21 he did an extensive research on the "Book of Kings" (Shahname) and Ta'azie which is Iranian traditional plays. He also studied the pre-Islamic history and familiarized himself with Persian painting.

The next ten years of his life were dedicated to writing in various publications about Eastern Art and Iranian theatre. He also wrote a good number of articles about cinema which later became the subject of one of his books. It is during this time that Bayzai wrote some of his masterpieces: "The Eight Voyage of Sinbad", "Banquet", "Serpant King", "Dolls", "Story of the Hidden Moon" and many more...

In 1968 he was one of the first ones to join the controversial Iranian Writer's Guild ( Kanun-e Nevisandegan-e Iran ). He started his film career with a successful short named "Uncle Mustache" (Amoo Sibiloo) in 1970. Immidetly after that he directed and produced his masterpiece "Downpour" (Ragbaar) with the late Parviz Fannizadeh as its main character.

Since then he has produced and directed 8 other movies and has made significant contribution to the development of cinema and theatre in Iran. Despite his popularity and knowledge, Bayzai has never been successful in gaining the support of the government, neither before nor after the revolution. After close to 20 years, two of his films "Death of Yazdgerd" and "Ballad of Tara" have still not been able to receive a screening permit. Both movies have been shelved due to the fact that they are not in accordance with the Islamic code currently in use in Iranian motion picture industry. "Bashu, the Little Stranger" was going to be his third film to be shelved. But it finally got a screening permit after the end of Iran-Iraq war. The movie is about a little boy who has lost his home and family to the war.

IMDB: How an unwell housewife makes heroic attempts to ascertain her own real identity.

This is a film for all those viewers who watch intellectually rich films after finding out more about directors as well as actors. If you are interested in watching a film which cannot be understood on first viewing, this is the film especially made for you. This is a film which you have been missing for a long time. At regular but brief intervals, "May be some other time" must be watched at least 4-5 times. I am saying so because of its artistic richness. The two important people related to this film :the veteran Iranian cinéaste Bahram Beyzai (killing rabids, ballad of Tara) and the talented actress Susan Taslimi (Bashu, Death of Yazdgerd) occupy a paramount place in the history of Iranian cinema. Mind you-Bahram Bayzai's films are absolutely unique. They cannot be compared to the works of other Iranian film makers such as Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf or Dariush Mehrjui. "May be some other time"-a film title which should not be taken too literally. It does not connote anything which a lot of moviegoers should be susceptible to know. In this film there is an unwise display of suspicion by a befuddled documentary director, Mr. Modabber. The victim is his wife Kian who is experiencing tremendous mental anguish and psychological turmoil. Astute viewers will surely find similarities with the film "Marnie" directed by Alfred Hitchcock starring Tippi Hedren. In "May be some other time", Bahram Beyzai addresses most fundamental, human issues like fidelity, identity, communication, belief, trust etc. Bahram Beyzai is one of the very few Iranian cineastes deft at theatrical arts. It is felt that his films have a feminist aura to them. "May be some other time" has numerous shades of documentary film too. It has been a long time that Bahram Bayzai has not made a new film. Only time will tell whether Bahram Bayzai would be able to direct a new film starring his regular actress Susan Taslimi who is now active in Sweden as a film cum theater director. It pains my heart and that is the reason why I would like to explicitly remark that is a great shame that almost all the films by Bahram Bayzai have not been distributed widely on DVD. What are the DVD labels like Artificial Eye, Criterion Collection, Kino, New Yorker Films or Facets doing ?

Niaz (The Need) (1991) - Alireza Davoudnejad

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0134844/

Country: Iran
Language: Persian

Plot: Two boys compete for one job they both need desperately. This movie portrays their rivalry.

Powerful & unforgettable film from Iran, 10 June 2010

Author: asgardsrei1 from Deutschland

"Niaz," or The Need is one of those rare, minimalist films that is sadly overlooked, in favor of flashier, more commercial films. The story plays like a parable of good overcoming bad, of generosity and love for ones neighbor conquering greed, and living dishonorably. "Niaz" is a film about a boy named Ali, a very responsible and strong kid, who wants to go to work so he can take care of his mother. A job digging ditches almost kills him, but he refuses to quit, until a better offer comes along, when his uncle sets him up to apprentice in a print shop. In a land where work is so scarce, this is a dream job. The problem is, another boy has been promised the same job, and when the two of them are pitted against each other to earn the job, conflict ensues. The other boy is tough, and it seems that he will do anything to get the job, even if it includes fighting to the death for it. The magic of this film begins when the two put aside their differences and actually become friends, leaving the adults around them in a state of confusion. It seems that the boys have a deeper understanding of right and wrong than do their elders. A visit to the Turkish boy's house one day, makes it clear to Ali just why the other boy is so desperate to work.

"Niaz" is absolutely unforgettable, a neorealist film that thoroughly involves the viewer in the lives of these two families. Also offering a beautiful and fascinating look into life in Iran. The beauty in this stark film lies in it's complete innocence; there is no sex, no nudity, no unnecessary violence etc.. It is one of the most personal and intimate films you will ever see, and for fans of films like truffaut's "400 blows" this one will rank alongside that classic. The beauty of this story affected me deeply, and the performances are all excellent and totally realistic. "Niaz" is a rare title, never released on DVD, but an old VHS can be found for this extraordinary film, (at least in North America) in Farsi language with English subtitles. Highest recommendation, and a personal favorite..

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1091828/

Country: Iran
Language; Persian

Darvish Khan's Stone Garden is located about 45 kilometers from Sirjan in Iran's Kerman province and 40 kilometers from Shiraz. The garden was created almost 4 decades ago by the late Darvish Khan Esfandiarpoor upon losing his treasured garden. Darvish Khan lived in the garden, with his only son and 7 grandchildren until his death in 2007. While he was a deaf and mute gardener, his abstract artworks which were a sign of his great imagination. During his lifetime due to his disabilities communication was never easy, however, Darvish Khan was always eager to show his work and explain about them to visitors.

The trunks and branches of dry trees were the basis of Darvish Khan’s stone garden and on these trees he used to connect different shapes of stones or any other objects, even dead animals he would find where he was living. He had a description for each of those decorated trees and by nodding, especially to the sky and then to his artworks, he would try to share his thoughts and imaginations.

Considering the weight of some of the stones, much effort had been put in creating this garden. One of the residents of the village recalls that three months after Darvish Khan’s death, one of the trees collapsed. It took 3 or 4 men to erect it again, even though originally Darvish Khan had acted alone in doing so.

Sayehaye bolande bad (Tall Shadows of the Wind) (1979) - Bahman Farmanara

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0320423/

Country: Iran
Language: Persian

This film is based on a four page short story by Golshiri, which together we expanded it into an 85 page script. It is the story of building a scare-crow in a village and how through some events and superstition the scare-crow turns into a revered symbol. The film has a double edge sword against tyranny and how metaphysical symbols are created by people and how they are ruled by their own creation. The film has the dubious honor of being banned both before and after revolution. Although after revolution got a three day release but was brought down by the censorship after three days.

One of the founding figures of the Iranian New Wave of the 70s, Bahman Farmanara attracted attention with his second feature, a powerful adaptation of Houshang Golshiri’s Prince Ehtejab (1974). A portrait of a dying monarch increasingly trapped in his own mental space, Prince Ehtejab was one of the first Iranian films to be seen widely abroad; by 1977 Farmanara was the head of the Iranian Film Development Company. His third feature, Tall Shadows of the Wind, was completed in 1978, as the uprising against the Shah was moving into high gear. Banned by the government, the film was briefly re-released following the Islamic Revolution — only to be withdrawn from circulation once again.
