Beautifully shot and strikingly conceived, it follows the comic misadventures of a young motorcyclist and former herdsman (Magaye Niang) who gets involved in petty crimes in Dakar during an attempt to escape to Paris with the woman he loves (Mareme Niang). Suspecting that Egyptian cinema has remained obscure over the years due to its derivative nature and lack of an innovative auteur, I ventured into another of its higher regarded works--Hussein Kamal's 1971 adaptation of Adrift on the Nile (Thartharah fawq al-Nil). Based on Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz's novel about middle-aged hedonists, the film plays like a watered down La Dolce Vita in Cairo.


Protagonist Anis Zaki works (or sits at a desk) occasionally at a boring bureaucratic government job, but primarily spends his time day dreaming and musing about the meaningless of his existence while high on hashish. A simple man with no family, Anis drifts through his routine existence and is drawn into a small circle of bourgeois artists and professionals that spend their evenings aboard a houseboat smoking hashish from a water pipe, dancing, and partying. Some had flirted with revolutionary ideals as youth, but now on the eve of the 1967 War they only express alienation and a desire to escape from Life's realities--Anis is celebrated for his great smoking ability and dealer contacts.

The other male hedonists range from hack journalist, to novelist, to womanizing actor, to lawyer. They believe in nothing except having a good time, and they seek and find women who have thrown off the restrictive shackles of Egyptian and Muslim culture to join their pleasure kingdom. A crisis occurs after a visit to Egypt's original capital in Memphis (just south of Cairo) where they climb and carouse all over the huge reclining statue of Ramses II. They accidentally run over a 19-year old peasant girl. Initially shocked, they soon recover and flee the scene. Back safely inside their houseboat, they begin rationalizing their behavior. Someone spins the situation to make out that the girl is fortunate for never having to suffer again and that they are heroic for making her into a martyr. It's back to the hashish as if nothing has happened.

But Anis remains troubled, becoming even quieter than usual as he sinks into his next high. Thus, he is the one vulnerable character--the only one who retains a conscience and plays a key role when investigative journalist Samara (Magda Al Khattib) enters into the mix, seeking a story about Egyptians who have essentially cut themselves from society and seek only to escape from Life through hashish.

Highly melodramatic and running 15 minutes too long, the simple story is easy to follow. The intended critical examination of modern flawed Egyptian society falls short of the goal due to its superficial characters that never come to life. Only Anis is drawn with any complexity, but still the narrative holds back from getting inside his skin. Just why the lonely protagonist has resorted to empty pursuits is only hinted at--he remains little more than a symbol of the forgotten generation that lies between Egypt's rich past and its uncertain future.

Despite the mundane script and its heavy reliance on off screen narration to convey Anis' thoughts, Kamal's film does contain intriguing elements--the biggest surprise being the insertion of a lively color musical sequence. Location shooting in Cairo, along the Nile, and in historic Memphis is also a bonus. Even thirty years ago, signs of Cairo's burgeoning traffic with its legendary 24/7 routine of honking autos is raising its head. Acting specially Emad Hamdy who played one of his best performances. i have seen this movie about 7 times or may be more and i can't stop watching it .

About direction by Hussen Kamal who is one the best Egyptian directors of all time .what i say is that movie has it all.i have owner ed to comment for this movie. the end ,it was scream to wake the people up ,i think they do. remember 1973 was 2 years later.WATCH IT.

Ajami is the first full length feature film directed by two young Israelis Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani.

They have produced an extraordinary film which features five separate stories set in Ajami, a poor Arab neighborhood situated in the city of Tel-Aviv/Yafo. The many characters are played mostly by non professionals, i.e. are not working actors, and the result gives a documentary feel to the film. Amazingly the level of acting is very high and ensures that the film is completely believable and absorbing from beginning to end. Perhaps the only drawback is the limited time available to develop each main character. The viewer wants to know more about them and their lives but time is limited.

The film shows a part of Israeli society rarely shown in Israeli films (Arab Moslem and Arab Christian families living in Ajami) and the makers are to be commended for their achievement in showing a rather hidden side of our society.

Israel's official submission to 82nd Academy Award's Foreign Language in 2010.

The acting is excellent, the dialogue is almost entirely in French although the singing is in Arabic....if one were to know Algeria only from the news reports in the international press, one would be very surprised at this portrait of Algerian society.

Synopsis

Good drama, good directing . Slightly less visually slick and stylish than higher budget dramas -A lot of characters to keep track of, hence less time for character development

The basic story is of a Moroccan hustler named Khaled who lives in Amsterdam at the center of a complicated web of love, crime, deceit and true friendship. He steals to survive, and the script is like a snapshot of Khaled's life at it's most important crossroad - when all of his chickens have returned home to roost, and when his life could slow down dramatically or spiral completely out of control.

Through Khaled's story the viewer meets a warm hearted man who lives and travels with his partner; Hanna, a German on a holiday from hell with her two battling parents; Roos, an impressionable Dutch girl whose two crazy brothers have joined Khaled in a life of crime; John, a charming visitor from New York whose wife (played by Marisa Tomei) is too erratic for him to handle but too rich for him to leave. Khaled's brother has been trying to bring him news from Morocco, but gets tangled up with a police detective who is hunting Khaled down.
This is a film showing an Amsterdam as a reluctant melting pot of diverse families - NOT a Disneyland of pot and prostitutes. It seems like a place where it's easy to pass through, but to actually live and survive there is difficult. The overlapping of stories will remind some of other films like "Crash" and "La Linea", and also of grittier ensemble dramas like "Traffic" and "Life is Hot in Cracktown".
Don't be turned off by the slightly video/television look of the film, especially its opening scenes. It is definitely a film worth watching and appreciating.

Since its release last year, tremendous controversy - all exhaustively detailed by the Moroccan press - swirled around the racy film. With surprising complexity, "Amours Voilées" treated the struggles of Batoul, a contemporary Casablancan woman, to juggle professional ambitions, love interests, and her family's traditions. Whereas such themes, if covered by American cinema, would have been inevitably oversimplified, to my pleasant surprise the film's producers embraced the nuances and ambiguities which define the coming-of-age process for young Moroccans today.

Not everyone who saw the film, of course, found it as engaging as I did. On the occasion of its release, one conservative politician lamented, "The film gives a very bad image of young veiled women, and could have a bad influence on their behavior." Inevitably, others went further. The secretary of Morocco's leading Islamist party decried the film's "Zionist influence" and criticized the work as "an obstacle to the spread of Islam." As fascinating a glimpse as Amours Voilées offered into the struggles of contemporary Moroccan women, I still wonder how the film might have been different had it not been written, directed, and produced by a man. Such are the ironies of life in Morocco.

Synopsis

This excellent black drama is a must see despite its nearly three-hour running time, the movie is one of the most watchable and enjoyable pieces of art in Egyptian Cinema.

I had read the story before seeing the controversial movie, so I had expectations. But despite that, got hooked as early as the quality intro that takes you smoothly through an enjoyable ride to discover the background behind that nostalgic building in central Cairo through a Sepia short clip.

The film is an artistic black drama which is full of cultural and political symbolism if you read carefully between the lines, my interpretation is that the building is a clear symbol of the country itself and how it transformed dramatically from the nostalgic early days of the 40s till the present day, shedding light on the price that the Egyptian society had to pay during that rough trip, and how the society has clear double standards that everyone is trying to ignore.

Every side story evolves in a different direction and involves controversial characters who are linked only by the same building (society) in some way or the other, the different stories are interweaves in an artistic way to dramatise different controversial issues and taboos from adultery, political corruption, abortion, homosexuality and rape (on both male and female) to Islamic fundamentalism, drug taking and smuggling, student activism and the general decline in

The movie has a general sad feel around it especially for anyone who lived in Egypt as it touches on the deterioration and many negative issues that are becoming more and more the norm in most Egyptian society levels that was once a conservative and religious society. It is strong wakeup call to those who love their country to stop burying their heads in the sand when it comes to double standards that's affecting everyone in the society making everyone feel inferior to the country. The story will make you think deeply about how and why a country like Egypt could end up where it is today.

The cinematography, steady cams, crane camera movement is brilliant, the smooth cuts and soft transitions boosts the romantic dimension of the storyline. As expected, the music score by Khaled Hammad is expressive, romantic and adds a lot of depth to many scenes. The tempo of the movie is just right, giving enough time for actors to express their feelings through longer than usual shots that will never leave you bored. Action scenes are also very well done.

A must see piece of art for anyone who is living or used to live in Egypt, as well as those who are interested in its eternal themes, dealt with in a specifically Arab and Muslim context.

Plot: In 1954, the National Liberation Front of Algiers shots many French policemen beginning a movement for the independence of their country; in return, the Chief of Police plants a bomb in the Arab quarter, killing many dwellers. The NLF sends three women with bombs to two bars and the Air France office in the European quarter, killing many people. The French government sends the military forces under the command of the abusive Colonel Mathieu that does not respect the human rights and uses torture to destroy the NLF command. In 1962, the Algerians finally achieve their aimed independence.

A savage war of peace.

An historian writing about the Algerian war against the French colonial authorities entitled his book "A Savage War of Peace". "The Battle of Algiers" provides many answers to that enigmatic title. It does not attempt to show us the entire war but centers on the city of Algiers. Even though you are told at the beginning that no documentary footage is used it is at times hard to believe as many of the images you see have a stark and often unsettling reality to them. Considering that this was a co production between Algeria and Italy the film is remarkable in that it does not turn itself a political tirade by taking sides. Instead the camera is a sort of neutral observer allowing us to witness events that spiraled from individual demonstrations to a full scale war of savage intensity. French officers who fought the Nazis a few years before degenerated into the mode of their former enemy while Algerians had no problems exploding bombs that would kill their own people. The camera shows no heros or villains but humanity in its darkest forms. This is a powerful film with superb direction and cinematography. It truly is one of a kind and once seen will never be forgotten.

Plot

Inspired by the true life case in which fourteen young heavy metal musicians were accused of "shaking the foundations of Islam" and Satanic worship due to their music and their unconventional lifestyles, director Ahmed Boulane's fact-based drama follows the Moroccan rockers as their story makes headlines across the globe, prompting numerous human rights groups to flock to their defense. Speedily convicted in a trial that can best be described as Kafkaesque, the musicians prepare to serve their prison sentences as the press brings their unusual plight to the world and outrage builds throughout Casablanca.

Because of the inflammatory content, the film was refused shooting permits for almost all of its locations, including a Moroccan courtroom which had to be reconstructed in a church in Casablanca at the very last minute.
