Set by the placid shores of Lake Lausanne, the movie opens with Swiss chocolate factory heiress Mika Muller (Huppert) marrying celebrated concert pianist André Polonski (Jacques Dutronc) for the second time, in a ceremony where family business blends with gossipy intrigue. Without pausing to clarify, Chabrol introduces a second domestic unit whose daughter, Jeanne (Anna Mouglalis), herself an aspiring pianist, learns that she was almost switched at birth with Guillaume (Rodolphe Pauly), André's highly unmusical son by his first (or rather, his second) wife, dead some years ago in car accident. The tangled genealogy has intimations of Elizabethan comedy—as does the spirited Jeanne, who, intrigued with the possibility that she might be the biological daughter of the great Polonski, presents herself at his wife's hilltop chateau.

Julie Wormser lives in comfort in St Tropez with her wealthy husband, Louis, who, 18 years her senior, has been forced into early retirement after suffering a heart attack. Julie is apparently unperturbed by her husband’s impotence and heavy drinking until the day she meets Jeff, a handsome young writer with whom she begins a secret love affair. The two lovers plan to murder Louis and make his death look like a boating accident. Unfortunately, things do not go according to plan. Having disposed of Louis’s body, Jeff heads off to Italy in the victim’s car, leaving Julie to face the police alone. Commissioners Lamy and Villon appear to accept her story that Louis fell off his boat after having suffered a fatal heart attack, but Julie is then shocked to learn that on the day before his death Louis withdrew all his money from his bank and put his house up for sale. Louis’s car is then found, smashed up at the foot of a precipice, with no sign of a body. With both Louis and Jeff missing, and her fortune evaporated, Julie is at a loss to understand what is happening. The game has only just begun..

When his young son is killed in a hit and run accident, Charles Thenier resolves to hunt down and murder the killer. By chance, Thenier makes the acquaintance of an actress, Helène Lanson, who was in the car at the time of the accident. Initially suspecting that she is the target of his revenge, Therier pretends to be in love with her, savouring his moment of triumph. Then his view changes when Helène confesses to having had a nervous breakdown at about the time of the car accident. Therier discovers that the real culprit of his son’s death was Helène’s brother-in-law, Paul Decourt, a truly horrible individual. Therier persuades Helène to introduce her to her family and they go to spend a few days at the family home in Brittany. Paul Decourt proves to be every bit as wicked as Therier suspects, and Therier has no qualms about carrying out his plan of revenge. However, he is not the only one to wish Decourt’s death...

Nada is a small leftwing terrorist group made up of six people from very different backgrounds. When an illusionist is caught attempting to smuggle a mysterious black box into Greece, the CIA uncover a daring scheme to neutralise military radar equipment in the area. Description:
Roland Wolf wants to write a book about a TV game-show host, the hail-fellow-well-met Christian Legagneur, who invites Wolf to his country estate, promising several days of lengthy interviews. Marie Latour (Isabelle Huppert) wants to be a singer, but she is a woman struggling against poverty in war-torn France, with two children to feed and a husband away fighting. When a neighbor becomes pregnant, Marie performs an abortion and is rewarded for her services with a Victrola. It's a small step from the Victrola to an income, and Marie finds that she likes to live comfortably and feed her children well. Her husband Paul (Francois Cluzet) returns and attempts to coerce her into being the type of wife he imagines he wants, but Marie insists on running things her way, and her husband is relegated to the role he imagined for her. She finds contentment in her power (merely the power to be herself and pursue her desires), but things are terribly out of balance in the world she was born into and eventually revenge is exacted. Claude Chabrol has created a remarkably complex and poignant film about a very complex subject: the true story of the last woman to be executed in France by guillotine.
