Holly (2006) - Guy Moshe

Holly

Director: Guy Moshe
Writers: Guy Moshe, Guy Jacobson
Country: USA | France | Israel | Cambodia
Year: 2006
Runtime: 114 min.
Genre: Drama

Cast:Ron Livingston, Chris Penn, Udo Kier, Virginie Ledoyen, Thuy Nguyen

SYNOPSIS
Shot on location in Cambodia, including many scenes in actual brothels in the notorious red light district of Phnom Penh, HOLLY is a captivating, touching and emotional experience. Patrick (Ron Livingston), an American card shark and dealer of stolen artifacts, has been 'comfortably numb' in Cambodia for years, when he encounters Holly (Thuy Nguyen), a 12-year-old Vietnamese girl, in the K11 red light village. The girl has been sold by her impoverished family and smuggled across the border to work as a prostitute. Holly's virginity makes her a lucrative prize, and when she is sold to a child trafficker, Patrick embarks on a frantic search through both the beautiful and sordid faces of the country, in an attempt to bring her to safety. Harsh, yet poetic, this feature forms part of the 'K-11' Project, dedicated to raising awareness of the epidemic of child trafficking and the sex slavery trade through several film projects. The film's producers endured substantial hardships in order to be able to shoot in Cambodia and have also founded the RedLight Children Campaign, which is a worldwide grassroots initiative generating conscious concern and inspiring immediate action against child sexploitation.

Holly has been sold by her poor family and smuggled across the border to Cambodia to work as a prostitute in the infamous "K11" red light village. While Holly waits to be sold at a premium for her virginity, she meets Patrick who is losing money and friends through gambling and bar fights. Their initial strong connection is disrupted when Holly is sold to a child trafficker and disappears. Patrick's pursuit to find Holly again, and her unrelenting efforts to escape her fate, carry us through the beautiful and harsh Cambodia. HOLLY is not just one girl. She is the voice of millions of children who are exploited and violated every year with no rights or protection. Written by Guy Jacobson

Three Seasons (1999) - Tony Bui

[RS] Three Seasons (1999) DVDRip XviD

Language: English | Vietnamese (Brazilian Portuguese, English, Spanish, Polish, Slovak, Turkish srt subtitles included)

Country: Vietnam | USA

Genre: Drama

Director: Tony Bui

Starring: Harvey Keitel, Don Duong, Tranh Manh Cuong, Zoe Bui

Synopsis: Vietnamese-American Tony Bui's film THREE SEASONS has the distinction of being the first American production to shoot in Vietnam since the war. A cinematic tone-poem that works more as a reflective mood piece than a traditional story, Bui's lyrical script and Lisa Rinzler's magical cinematography combine to create an original, lasting motion picture. Set in modern-day Ho Chi Minh City, the film is a triptych of stories about characters dealing with loss and redemption: an American veteran (Harvey Keitel) searches for a daughter he fathered during the Vietnam War; a young woman harvests lotus blossoms for a reclusive leper-poet; and a lonely cyclo driver offers love to a world-weary prostitute. The three stories subtly converge to deliver a portrait of a strife-worn society attempting to heal itself.

Ao lua ha dong (The White Silk Dress) (2006) - Luu Huynh

Winner of the Audience Award at the Pusan International Film Festival, The White Silk Dress is a magnificent drama that portrays how one poor and oppressed family manages to maintain its pride and dignity and to overcome adversities. Hoi An, Vietnam in the 1950s. Dau and Gu, who have slaved away for a landlord all their lives, finally are able start a family. However, they get caught within the unrelenting cycle of war and poverty and face numerous tragedies. Even after losing everything, they still maintain their faith in the Ao Dai-a symbol of the lofty and pure willpower of Vietnamese women-that Dau has left behind. Set against a background of the deep-rooted traditional culture, Huynh Luu's beautiful film not only captures the story of a family, the sacrifice of a mother or one couple's passionate love story, but also illustrates the spirit of a country and of a nation determined to keep their traditions alive. It is a sublime story that speaks, in particular, to the strength and resilience of women caught in the grips of poverty. The latest news is that this movie will represent Vietnam to compete as foreign language feature entry in Oscar 2008, pending registration.

An impoverished wife and mother desperate to provide her daughters with the ao dais' (a traditional tunic slit down the sides and worn over pants) required to attend school takes on a most non-traditional part-time job in director Huynh Luu's melancholy period drama. French colonial rule on Vietnam is on the verge of collapse, and hunchback servant Gu (Nguyen Khanh Quoc), who works for the puppet governor, longs to be wed servant girl Dau (Trong Anh Ngoc). Though the pair lacks the traditional means to marry, Gu bequeaths his love with the ao dai he has carried since childhood and the pair forms a faithful union. When Gu's master is assassinated, the pair quickly flees and relocates to the seaside village of Hoi An. Twelve years later Gu and Dau have started a family. Though the couple barely makes enough money to sustain themselves, much less two daughters, Dau is determined to ensure that her girls have proper ao dai's by the time they reach school age. In order to raise the finds needed to make her dream a reality, Dau accepts a part time position as a wet nurse to a wealthy old man without telling her husband. Later, when Gu finds out what his wife has been doing to earn money and the bombs fall ever closer to their home, rising tensions in the once happy household mirror an encroaching threat that will soon lead to tragedy for all involved. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

L'odeur de la papaye verte (The Scent of Green Papaya) (1993) - Anh Hung Tran

"Watching it is like seeing a poem for the eyes." That's how Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert described this exquisite, Oscar-nominated, French-Vietnamese film from 1993, which begins in the 1950s and ends more than a decade later during the early years of the Vietnam war. The story is set almost entirely in a Saigon house where a 10-year-old orphan girl named Mui arrives to work as a servant. As she grows into a beautiful young woman, Mui is quietly and carefully observant of everything around her, from the scent of green papaya (hence the title) to the relationship between her employers. The film takes its visual cues from Mui's observations--it's a placid, soothing film that lingers over the physical and emotional details of its setting and story. What's really astonishing about this beautiful film is that director Anh Tran Hung shot it entirely on a soundstage in Paris, but the sights and sounds are so completely convincing that you'd swear the setting is an actual home in Saigon. This remarkable craftsmanship remains invisible to the viewer, and the seductive progression of the story unfolds with exacting visual precision. It's a film about Mui's growth and development, but also about her benevolent effect on the world around her. As such, it's a movie to savor like no other, life affirming and glorious in the memorable depth of its captivating simplicity."
