It is the 80's, and fourteen year-old Filipa is spending her vacation at Búzios with her father, Mathias, her alcoholic mother, Clarice, and her two younger siblings in their beach house. When Filipa feels that the relationship of her parents is deteriorating, she snoops in her father's office. There she finds pictures of Mathias with his American lover Ângela hidden in a drawer of his desk. When Mathias and Clarice announce to their children that they are not going to live together for a period, the confused Filipa believes that Ângela is the responsible for the separation of her parents and discovers that the marriage of Mathias and Clarice is built on a bed of lies.

Meanwhile, Acerola's wife and babysitter Cris is invited to work in São Paulo and she sees the chance to raise money to buy a house of her own; she tells Acerola that he must take care of their son Clayton alone for one year. When the owner of the hill and Laranjinha's cousin Madrugadão is betrayed by his right-hand Nefasto, he is expelled from the slum and Laranjinha and Acerola have also to leave the hill. While Madrugadão plots a plan to invade and recover the hill with the support of the gang of the drug lord from Morro do Careca, Acerola and Laranjinha unravel the past of their fathers.

Plot

The concept of fabricating faith and attempting to find solace in the face of the ultimate mystery are the central themes of this film concerning a man exalted to sainthood after performing a miracle on his deceased mother, who had recently committed suicide. Santinho lives in a riverine community located in the northern Amazonas state. Upon being faced with a son's worst nightmare, he does something that takes his entire sect by complete surprise, and causes them to single him out as a glorified soul.

Santinho is a petulant young man, dressed in a gown of silk, inhabited by the spirit of a young girl who died twenty years earlier. While everyone is preparing for the annual celebration in memory of the girl, the atmosphere becomes explosive and passions are unleashed.

The ritual around this reincarnation gives the young man with ambiguous sexuality a central place in this isolated society at the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

Plot

"A Rainha Diaba" is Antonio Carlos da Fontoura's second film, 6 years (!!) after his critical and box-office hit "Copacabana Me Engana'. Making a total change in theme and visual style, "Rainha..." is about an underworld drug dealer in Rio de Janeiro, called "queen" Diaba (meaning "she-devil" and played by Milton Gonçalves), who happens to be black, gay, powerful, vindictive and extremely violent. As one of Diaba's dealers and special protégé is threatened to be caught by the police, Diaba concocts with sleazy Catitu (Nelson Xavier) a plan to make small-time pimp Bereco (Stepan Nercessian) fall down in his place. But things don't turn out as expected, as treason lurks everywhere around Diaba.

This was one of the first Brazilian films to deal -- in expressionist, non-realistic style -- with then new reality of large-scale organized drug dealing in Rio's favelas, on its way to become the incredibly violent and bloody business it is today. In his candid, must-see interview for the DVD release, Fontoura explains the idea behind "Diaba": every time he smoked a joint he wondered the amount of bloodshed that came with it.

The most remarkable aspect of "Rainha" is its visual treatment: the colors scream, like a Frida Kahlo on acid. José Medeiros' lighting and agile camera-work are stunning, but it's Ângelo de Aquino's hallucinating, jaw-dropping sets and costumes that leave an indelible impression, making early Almodóvar seems conservative by comparison. Fontoura's sure-hand style manages to mix expressionism, hyper-realim and gory violence (be prepared to see gallons of blood throughout) with a stylized depiction of Rio's underworld, thanks to good locations and fine casting choices.

The four stars of the movie are in great shape: Milton Gonçalves' Diaba is rather two-dimensional (he had no time to prepare for his role) but his hopelessly masculine physique helps: it's because he's a dog of a drag queen that his violence and anger seem legitimate. Odete Lara (Fontoura's ex-wife) is still an impressively sexy woman at 45, brave in her fight/sex scene with Bereco and giving it all in her scary torture scene, and she's obviously delighted (so are we) to have the two singing numbers that function as breath-recovering pauses for the audience. Nelson Xavier does his sleazy act wittily, maybe a tad mannered but always avoiding clichés. Most of all, it's Stepan Nercessian who steals our attention, building a living flesh-and-blood character out of Bereco, from small-time pimp to wide-eyed novice crook to trapped mouse in a big game, always managing to making us care for him, even if he's a rotten scumbag.

"Diaba" is thrilling, definitely worth your time for its eye-popping colors, costumes and sets, especially in the sparkling new DVD release.

Synopsis: Some films show pride in their singularity: projects that are difficult to pigeonhole and which draw neither on heritage nor genre for inspiration. Like many other otherworldly films, a description is difficult. Imagine "The Holy Mountain" meets "Nietschze For Dummies" on a budget that Roger Corman would balk at, and you're coming close to picturing this. However, Marins is a true original. Like Jodorowsky, he casts himself as a messiah figure, but it doesn't come across as bloated egoism like it did in "El Topo", because the character of Finis Hominis is meant to sprout Marins' philosophy instead of portraying the director as holier than thou. José Mojica Marins never completely mastered film-making technique (the man has no idea how to keep a good pace), but hes so impassioned and his films achieve what they set out to do (being weird), that he deserves much more recognition. Lying somewhere between Ed Wood and Alejandro Jodorowsky lies Marins. "Finis Hominis" is definitely not the best starting place for the man ("At Midnight I Take Your Soul") or his finest achievement ("Awakening of the Beast"), but its certainly his most surreal and possibly my personal favorite of his output.

Pixote (1981) - Hector Babenco

After a police round up of street children Pixote is sent to a juvenile reformatory. The prison is a hellish school where Pixote uses glue sniffing as a means of emotional escape from the constant threats of abuse and rape.
It soon becomes clear that the young criminals are only pawns in the criminal, sadistic games of the prison guards and their commander.
When a boy dies of physical abuse by the guards, they frame the lover of the transgendered effeminate boy known as Lilica (Jorge Julião), for the murder. This lover then conveniently also dies, with some help from the guards.
Soon after, Pixote, Lilica and her new lover Dito (Gilberto Moura) find an opportunity to flee from the prison. First they stay at the apartment of Cristal (Tony Tornado), a former lover of Lilica, but when tensions arise they go to Rio for a cocaine drug deal; there, however, they get duped by a showgirl.
After some time bumming around the city, Pixote and his friends go to a club for another drug deal. While there, Pixote finds the showgirl that took their drugs and stabs her.
They become pimps for the prostitute Sueli who is definitely past her prime and is possibly ill from a botched abortion. The group conspires to rob her johns, but when Lilica's lover Dito falls for Sueli, Lillica leaves. The robbery scheme fails when an American john fights back (because he apparently does not understand Portuguese) so they have to shoot him. In the ensuing fight, Pixote accidentally shoots and kills Dito as well.
Pixote tries to gain comfort from Sueli, treating her as a mother figure, but she rejects him. He leaves and is seen walking down a railway line, gun in hand, away from the camera, his figure disappearing in the distance, out of the film's view.

And the eyes of Fernando Ramos da Silva, his doomed young actor, regard us from the screen not in hurt, not in accusation, not in regret -- but simply in acceptance of a desolate daily reality."
