Based on a novel of Vasilis Vasilikos, "Z" is about the assasination (1963) of Grigoris Lambrakis, a distinguished athlete, doctor and politician, as well as an active pacifist and humanitarian. The film depicts the way para-state and paramilitary mechanisms operated in Greece and the efforts of an honest investigator against them.

Plot Summary

This is a well written tale about the odyssey of an illegal immigrant into the European Union. Our hero arrives by boat on the shores of Greece, hides in a luxury tourist resort called "Eden Resort" and after many adventures there, such as sleeping with an older German woman, getting snogged by a gay co-worker, etc., travels to Paris to meet a magician with whom he made acquaintance in the tourist club. We witness the adventures of Elias, our hero, only to see through his eyes the different approaches of Europeans to illegal immigrants living and struggling in their midst - some try to shag him and he fends off approaches by gay lorry-drivers and others as well as an assault by right-wing National Front supporters. Excellent camera work, brilliant performance by Riccardo Scamarcio, masterful narration by Costa-Gavras.

Elias (Riccardo Scarmacio), is not given a nationality, a move by the director to make a wider message with his film. We join Elias as he and his friend sit amongst hundreds of other illegal immigrants bound for France. Elias’ dream is to make it to Paris, which he has imagined as some sort of fairytale city in his mind, a place full of opportunity for a man such as himself. His plans are thrown into chaos when in the dead of night the men in charge of the boat dump the immigrants in the middle of the ocean, the water police fast approaching it is only the quick thinking Elias who jumps into the water and swims for land.

In World War II, the sanitation engineer and family man Kurt Gerstein is assigned by SS to be the Head of the Institute for Hygiene to purify the water for the German Army in the front. Later, he is invited to participate in termination of plagues in the concentration camps and he develops the lethal gas Zyklon-B. When he witnesses that the SS is killing Jews instead, he decides to denounce the genocide to the Pope to expose to the world and save the Jewish families. The idealist Jesuit priest Riccardo Fontana from an influent Italian family gives his best efforts being the liaison of Gerstein and the leaders of the Vatican.

40 international directors were asked to make a short film using the original Cinematographe invented by the Lumière Brothers, working under conditions similar to those of 1895. There were three rules: (1) The film could be no longer than 52 seconds, (2) no synchronized sound was permitted, and (3) no more than three takes. The results run the gamut from Zhang Yimou's convention-thwarting joke to David Lynch's bizarre miniature epic.
