A group of friends travel to a cabin in the Norwegian forest. It's a rumour that at night a crazy man can be heard screaming at a lake nearby the cabin.

"Lake of the Dead" is the story of a six young friends who travel from Oslo to Østerdalen in order to spend a few relaxing days in a cabin deep in the woods. Once they arrive, the brother (who had gone to the cabin some time before) of one of the women appears to have disappeared. A local legend claims that a one-legged man who died 100 years ago still roams the woods and hypnotizes people to drown themselves in a small lake. He murdered his sister and her lover, then drowned himself in the dark waters. Despite its age "Lake of the Dead" still managed to creep me out. The mystery of the lake is interesting and the climax is truly creepy. There is an eerie legend,a one-legged crow and the lake itself that easily could have been a murderer. The film has some striking similarities to Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead", but I strongly doubt that Raimi has seen it.

Engelen (The Angel) (2009) - Margreth Olin

 Engelen (The Angel) doesn't start off making us believe this is a really good movie, but half way through Norwegian filmmaker Margareth Olin takes the grip. You start understanding how heartfelt and realist this really is. Heroin addiction is not understandable to most of us. But the need to cope and to be loved is. Margareth Olin was to make a new documentary, but disagreements with the family of the addict, made her make it into a feature film, realistically and beautifully portrayed by Maria Bonnevie.

We get to know the young addicted woman, as she visits her daughter, completely stoned and disgusting, together with her well-meaning, but sadly helpless mother. Then we are getting behind the tragedy. How could this happen. This is where the explaining tends to be "oh no not another abused childhood-story", but the film doesn't go all the way, though only implicating there could've been something more ruining this young girls life. We get told by the storyteller (Olin herself) that no one really understand where it went wrong. And this is where the film takes itself up to another level, far beyond most of these kind of films.

Olin has impressed once more. Balancing on a 7 or 8 out of 10 is not because of the storytelling or the acting. This is actually superb. The problem is the first part of the movie, not able to engage the way the latter part does. There's an immediate danger you'll give up before you find the good stuff in this bag. Also some clipping is not to my satisfaction. This is maybe a bit too much documentary in the styling. OK, the film has a genuine feel of a documentary, still not being one. Being harsh, realistic, hardly without music in the first part, we find the poetry and some fabulous music. Especially the final theme is so well connected to the ending, that it is almost unbelievable.

It is strange how this movie grows you to jump-start your own heart, even if you really don't want to care. This is the same you feel being approached by a begging addict in the streets. Next time I meet one of this miserable youngsters, I'll be thinking of "Engelen". It gives no real answers to how and why it happened, but an answer we all need to find, is to care about our fellow humans not able to cope with life as it is.

Two brothers in their seventies, Far ("Dad") and Moe, have lived together all their lives in a little house in the country, the only interruption being when Far made a weekend trip to Småland on his moped during the second World War. The past returns when his adult son dating from his Swedish visit, Konrad, comes to live with them after his mother has fallen ill. Soon Moe is about to discover that three is indeed a crowd...

"Eggs" is the debut film of Bent Hamer, who became popular to an international audience by his later movies "Kitchen Stories", "Factotum" and "O' Horten".

Note: The movie itself is not subtitled, but there is another avi file included containing some "Best Of" clips from the movie, which has hardcoded english subtitles. Having seen them the rest of the movie should be a pleasure because most of it needs no explaining words.

Brennende Blomster (Burning Flowers) (1985) - Eva Dahr, Eva Isaksen

A lonely, striking older woman and a shy young student who delivers flowers as a part-time job are attracted to each other in this engaging story. It is the mid-1960s and Hermann (Torstein Hølmebakk) buys Beatles records like everyone else, he also indulges in an erotic magazine or two to satisfy a growing curiosity about sex, and he is not actively pursuing his occasional date Unni (Karoline Waal). Instead, Hermann's imagination has been quickened by Rose (Lise Fjeldstad), a woman who orders flowers for herself on a regular basis. As Rose tells Hermann the story of how she used to work in the circus in a trapeze act but was deserted by her lover when she became pregnant, Hermann is even more enthralled by her appeal as a woman...and a close encounter of the traditional kind seems almost inevitable.
