The story opens with a violent clash between cops and criminals, in one of the most visually stunning shootouts committed to film in recent years. Professional thief, Yuen (Richie Ren), and his crew are interrupted during the completion of a heist, placing them in the sights of rogue cop, Cheung (Nick Cheung). When the news crews arrive and film the long shootout in the streets of Hong Kong, the public is outraged at the lack of preparation and protection from the police, and watch as the thieves make their escape. After the crew’s suspected hideout is revealed, bold, new police commissioner, Rebecca Fong (Kelly Chen) proposes that the police invite the media to film what should be a smooth takedown, in order to win back public approval. The events that follow lead both sides of the law into an unpredictable finale with the cameras rolling throughout.

Synopsis

Ivan is an IT professional who works hard and has no time for dating. The young man is forced to come face-to-face with his sexuality when Josh from Israel asks if he is gay during a television talk show in which the two are guest speakers and a life-long friendship begins.
After entering the gay world, Ivan meets Windson who professes to be straight. A curious friendship blossoms between the two involving many episodes of nude wrestling, swimming, embracing and sharing a bed. Though apparently attracted to the free-spirited Ivan, Windson insists on limiting their relationship to nothing more than kisses and fondling.
When Windson announces he plans to wed his long-time girlfriend, Ivan is devastated and sets off on a journey of discovery that takes him from Israel to Thailand to Australia and finally back to Hong Kong.
Permanent Residence is flamboyantly out. With the bodies of avid gym-goers, both leads take delight in celebrating their naked, muscular flesh for the audience’s viewing pleasure in full frontal nudity (no erections! And this is not porn!). The gay never-never land is effectively contrasted with the confining world of social norms that force Windson to stay with a woman who expects wedded bliss. The coming out will strike a chord with many Asian audience. Alternating between homoerotica and existential contemplations on life and death, the film is unique and intuitive. The photographic images present a tactile materiality that far exceeds the controlling needs of story, bringing to the natural realm an unexpected poetry and perspective.

This movie is hard to find movie on the net.
Angelica Lee and Isabella Leong investigate the enigmatic death of a loved one at sea in this film by Tsui Hark. The visuals and camera-work are excellent, with some cool sequences filmed underwater. (Seriously, the cinematography is exceptional.) The ghouls are very unusual and are "touched up" with some CGI. The storyline is very engaging, with multiple elements introduced to keep the viewer off balance. Some have criticized the film for being schizophrenic, but this method of storytelling is actually effective, interesting, and adds some unpredictability. The romantic elements are on the cheesy side, but this film simply does not deserve the abuse it has taken from online reviewers. It maintains interest from start to finish; and sometimes that's good enough.

Description:
A Japanese reporter arrives in Vietnam hoping to capture the essence the society under the rule of the Communist Party. With the help of a vietnamese girl, he eventually opens his eyes to the painful truth of postwar Vietnam.

This film, which was released in 1982 in Hong Kong to rave reviews and packed theaters, was one of the very few "politicized" films made in Hong Kong. Since then Ann Hui has continued to engage such subjects, but out of the contemporary HK filmmakers, only Fruit Chan could be said to be a match for Ann Hui in these politicized subject matters.

"Boat People" is essentially a dramatization of the political realities facing common Vietnamese people after the Communist Liberation of 1976. Hui has very shrewdly utilized a dramatic structure (rather than a documentary) to show us the truth behind the Vietnamese Communist regime, which forces so many commoners to leave as refugees by boat to elsewhere in Asia. Hui never overplays the emotions or the drama, instead choosing to tell the story straight. The deaths, the harsh facts, all come across very strongly, but like what one IMDb reviewer has said, there is no preaching, nor are there any strenuous effort to make a statement as in American Vietnam movies. Ann Hui herself stated that she made many interviews of Vietnamese refugees before she decided to dedicate herself into making this movie.

The whole film is shot in China, Hainan Island, with the support of the Chinese Communist Party. Some critics read the movie as a reflection of anxiety on the coming 1997 Communist takeover of Hong Kong, but Ann Hui herself never appears to indicate this was her intent. The movie has dialogue almost entirely in Cantonese (the language of Hong Kong, the place of production); Vietnamese is used sparingly, as in the songs, but most Westerners may not be able to tell the difference. The cast is almost entirely Chinese, but Ann Hui probably selected most of them because of their facial resemblance with the Vietnamese. It is impossible to tell that the female lead, Season Ma, is not Vietnamese (she is Chinese).

Three decades later, this film still remains Ann Hui's most considerable achievement. It was voted in 2002 as #8 of the best Chinese films of all times by the Hong Kong Film Academy. The film's impact is such that it made many of Ann Hui's later political films, such as "Ordinary Heroes", seem quite tame in comparison. But it's such a pity so few people in the IMDb has seen this movie - as of 2009, only slightly more than a hundred people has voted in the IMDb. This is an arresting film on an important subject that it needs to be seen by anyone remotely interested in the Vietnam problem - even though the political situation of Vietnam has moved on a lot since the late 1970s.

Chingmy looks incredible during the dance parts of the movie. Pretty funny film

A disillusioned killer embarks on his last hit but first he has to overcome his affections for his cool, detached partner. Thinking it's dangerous and improper to become involved with a colleague he sets out to find a surrogate for his affections. Against the sordid and surreal urban nightscape (set in contemporary Hong Kong), he crosses path with a strange drifter looking for her mysterious ex-boyfriend and an amusing mute trying to get the world's attention in his own unconventional ways.

Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels dives headfirst into the cultural alienation and milennial dread of modern-day Hong Kong. The film has a distinctly detached feeling about it that is certainly close to what its characters must feel. Some scenes are hypnotic and dreamlike, while others seem brutally real. The film's characters always seem to be wandering, or, perhaps, simply going through the motions of life. The voice-overs - which Wong uses as effectively as any director since the heyday of Terrence Malick - effectively add an extra dimension to the characters. The ending of Fallen Angels is one of the most beautiful, poetic, and true ever filmed.

While this film's predecessor, Wong's Chungking Express is a wonderful, exceptional movie, Fallen Angels is ultimately superior - a masterpiece that Wong only surpassed with his last film, the astonishing In the Mood for Love. Still, while In the Mood for Love may be Wong's best film to date, Fallen Angels remains (as it probably always will) the quintessential Wong Kar-wai picture in that it perfectly embodies the bold, Godardian, recklessness that the name Wong Kar-wai immediately brings to mind.

Plot
