Synopsis: A delinquent becomes a full-fledged criminal as Taipei's underworld explodes in this drama from Taiwanese director Doze Niu. In the 1980s, Mosquito (Mark Chao) was seventeen years old when his family moved to the rough and tumble Monga district of Taipei. As the new kid at school, Mosquito was frequently harassed by bullies until he struck up a friendship with Dragon (Rhydian Vaughan), a tough kid whose father, Geta (Ma Ju-lung), was a local mobster. Mosquito and Dragon form a gang, "The Gang of Princes," and their swaggering style and willingness to fight makes them big fish in their school's small pond. But a bloody run in with rival gang banger Dog Boy (Chen Han-tien) gives the boys an education in the consequences of the gangster's life, and Geta tries to teach the boys about the necessities and realities of life outside the law. Mosquito and Dragon are not easily dissuaded, and after graduating from school the Gang Of Princes take their place in Monga's organized crime community. But the violence and chaos of life on Taipei's streets is ramped up to new heights when crime boss Gray Wolf (Doze Niu) launches a turf war to take control of the territory. Mengjia (aka Monga) was an official selection at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.

Synopsis: It speaks much of a man when his name is still mentioned as one of the greatest philosophers in Chinese history after more than 2,500 years- but such is the influence of Confucius. Admittedly though, most, if not all, of what we know about Confucius derives from his teachings, or his words of wisdom- indeed, we know little of the life of Confucius and more interestingly, the source of his insight. Hu Mei’s “Confucius” is therefore highly anticipated, since there hasn’t been a single biopic of the man as far as this reviewer can recall. But the anticipation is even greater knowing that Chow Yun-Fat is in the lead role, the charismatic Hong Kong actor’s big screen appearances of late have been few and far between (his last Chinese film was Zhang Yimou’s period drama “Curse of the Golden Flower”). The movie begins with a middle-aged Confucius in the northern kingdom of Lu where he has just been made the Minister of Law by the King. Apparently, Confucius’ teachings have had a powerful influence on the people in his district- crime rates are low and people are content- and the King wants him to spread his word to others in the kingdom. Wise as they may be, his thinking was ahead of his time, so when he disregards the traditional practice of burying servants with their dead masters and adopts one such runaway boy, he unwittingly makes enemies with the other government officials...

Synopsis: At age 13, a street kid known as "El Polaquito" makes lis living mostly by singing tangos (originally sung by his namesake, the singer "El Polaco") on Buenos Aires commuter trains. He falls in love with a 16 year old prostitute, also working for the Mafia controlling child exploitation in one of Argentina's busiest train stations. He tries to rescue her from this cruel life with no future. But to do so, he must confront the ruthless adult gang leaders, as well as the young kids who protect them, believing that this Mafia is truly their only option. The story is supposedly based on a true story, which happened, and was discovered in Argentina in the late 90s, early 2000s.

Sinopsis: Un chico de la calle (13 años) se gana la vida cantando tangos en los trenes de la estación central de Buenos Aires. Imita a un famoso cantante de tangos argentinos (Polaco Goyeneche), por lo que la gente le conoce como El Polaquito. El Polaquito conoce a Pelu, joven prostituta que también trabaja en la estación, de la cual queda inmediatamente prendado y a la que intenta rescatar de la mafia que la explota. Este comportamiento de El Polaquito lo enfrenta con Rengo, líder de esta mafia que, en connivencia con la policía de la estación, comienza a hostigarlo tratando de quitarle esa idea de la cabeza e intentando interrumpir esa relación con Pelu. Pese a ello, El Polaquito acomete una denodada lucha contra la mafia, sin medir riesgos ni consecuencias, procurando emprender, definitivamente, el camino de amor que ha trazado junto a Pelu.

Synopsis: The film focuses on Minerva Mirabal and tells the true story of how she and her sisters came to represent the greatest threat to dictator Rafael Trujillo and his regime. The Mirabal sisters were in involed in an underground movement against the government. They were assassinated in 1960 by men under the instruction of the Luis Amiama Tio according to Pupo Roman, although their death was made to appear as an automobile accident. Many citizens were outraged and a few months later Trujillo was assassinated by an ambush lead by Antonio de La Maza, who was played by actor Cesar Evora. Dede' Mirabal, the only surviving sister, collaborated with production of the movie and has a part where she plays herself....Powerful!!!

SYNOPSIS: When his wife and parents leave for the United States shortly after the Bay of Pigs invasion, 38-year-old playboy Sergio (Sergio Corrieri) resigns himself to a ritual of neurotic self-analysis. From his apartment, he observes the threat of foreign invasion that haunts the hazy, not-so-distant horizon. Bored and unemployed (he owns the apartment building he lives in), he chases after women all over Havana before finally meeting and bedding 16-year-old Elena (Daisy Granados), who he seemingly attempts to mold after his ex-wife by giving the young girl the woman's hand-me-downs. If Alea deliberately likens the virginal Elena to a country that welcomes its own defilement, Sergio's acquittal by the courts (he's accused to raping the girl by her parents) is no doubt indicative of the man's obsession with Cuba's own defilement of its Marxist loyalties.
Underdevelopment refers both to Cuba's political stagnation and Sergio's own sense of false enlightenment. The way Alea pieces together the film must count as its own act of political resistance: documentary footage calls attention to a complex individual-group dialectic tearing up the country from the inside while a series of self-referential, surrealist interruptions are alive with better-than-here hopefulness. "She makes me feel underdevelopment everywhere," says Sergio of Elena before visiting the home of Ernest Hemingway, who according to Sergio killed animals and mounted them on his walls so he wouldn't have to kill himself. One of Alea's most jarring framing devices situates Elena as an exotic specimen ("a beautiful Cuban señorita") trapped beneath the lens of American imperialism. Like Hemingway and Elena herself, it's only a matter of time before Cuba itself would self-destruct.


Spanish: Que las contradicciones del burgués pueden reflejar como en un espejo las de la sociedad donde la burguesía ha llevado la voz cantante, lo demuestra esta historia de razonamiento e ironía. Una historia personal que hubiera sido intrascendente de no ocurrir en los vertiginosos días de la revolución, cuando todas las contradicciones se pusieron al rojo vivo. La película entrega un monólogo interior con mirada a la calle, como es la novela homónima de Edmundo Desnoes.

Synopsis: Carmen (the amazingly beautiful and talented Paz Vega) works in a cigar factory in Seville, a factory adjoining the military station where the very proper José (Leonardo Sbaraglia) is stationed. Carmen is tempestuous and in a fight instigated by a fellow factory worker bringing attention to the fact that Carmen is a gypsy, Carmen murders the co-worker and is arrested. José is physically attracted to the voluptuous Carmen and when Carmen flirts with him he consents to allow her to escape - his payback is the promise for a night of passion with Carmen. Carmen keeps her pact, providing José with his first sexual encounter, and José is doomed. His lack of military discipline results in his losing his rank and being imprisoned for a while, but at his release José encounters Carmen again, kills a fellow officer, and in fear runs off to the hills to live with the smugglers and gypsies that are Carmen's people. Many incidents occur to try the passionate bond between the lovers, but when Carmen's real husband is released from prison, destructive behaviors take over, behavior's that include Carmen's infatuation and affair with a bullfighter and the passion of Carmen and José comes to a tragic end.


Spanish: Durante un viaje por España, el azar convierte al escritor francés Prosper Mérimée (Jay Benedict) en testigo de una historia apasionante. La naturaleza libre y enigmática de una mujer llamada Carmen (Paz Vega), su belleza meridional, su carácter arrebatado y pasional, hacen que el sargento José (Leonardo Sbaraglia) se convierta en víctima y protagonista de acontecimientos extraordinarios, de amores turbulentos y pasiones incontrolables, en una cadena de fatalismo, celos y sangre. Con cada nuevo amante de Carmen, con cada nuevo episodio de amor, pasión y celos, José da un paso hacia la marginalidad y la delincuencia. La muerte tiñe una y otra vez de rojo las manos de José hasta que finalmente, tras disparar contra el último amante de Carmen, intenta llevársela lejos y empezar una nueva vida. Pero ni las súplicas ni las amenazas le sirven de nada. En vano se humillará ante Carmen, ofreciéndole una vida próspera y feliz. Las apasiona-das palabras de amor caen en el vacío y en la más terrible de las indiferencias. Y la impotencia y la pasión empujan una vez más la mano de José hacia la navaja desnuda. ¿Qué otra cosa podía hacer? Si cada episodio de amor es una pequeña muerte, ¿cómo se puede retener todo el amor de Carmen, cómo se puede abrazar su fuego abrasador?.
