Loong Boonmee raleuk chat ( Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives) (2010) - Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Image

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588895/

Uncle Boonmee is suffering from kidney failure. As an avid practitioner of Yoga, he is well aware of his body. He knows that he will die in 48 hours. He feels his illness must be related with his bad karma. He has killed too many communists, he says. Boonmee calls his distant relatives to take him back from hospital to die at home, a longan farm. There, they are greeted by the ghost of his deceased wife who has re-appeared to take care of him. His lost son also returns from the jungle in an ape-like form. The son has mated with a creature known as a ‘monkey ghost’ and has lived in the trees with her for the past 15 years. On the first night, Boonmee talks about his past lives that he remembers. On a second night, while the ghost wife is doing his kidney dialysis, Boonmee has a sudden urge to visit a place she has mentioned. So the group takes a journey into the jungle at night. It is full of animals and spirits. They finally reach a cave on top of the hill. Boonmee realizes that this is the cave in which he was born in the first life that he can remember. Then he passes away, taking with him tales that span hundreds of years. (The Match Factory)

4BIA is a portmanteau horror flick consisting of 4 horror stories directed by 4 of Thailand’s most talented directors. The first, directed by Yongyoot Thongkongtoon is titled “Happiness” but don’t let the title of the movie mislead you. “Tit For Tat” directed by Paween Purijitpanya (Body) gives a mystically dark and gruesome twist to the meaning of “an Eye for an Eye”. Then there is “In The Middle” directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter and Alone) and his teenage tale that totally walks off the Buddhist beaten path and on to a horrifyingly humorous escapade that may leave you laughing more than ‘shuttering’, excuse the pun. Finally “Last Fright” directed by Parkpoom Wongpoom (Shutter, Alone) is a psychological thriller that reminds all of us of the old adage "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” except if you are the ‘other’ woman on the receiving end.

Slice (2009) - Kongkiat Komesiri

Image

Genre: Film Noir / Horror / Drama
Director: Kongkiat Komesiri
Country: Thailand
Language: Thai
Subtitles: English (srt file)
Aspect Ratio: Widescreen (720x384)
Length: 95 mns
File: Dvdrip / Mkv / 1.36gb

There is a raw, rugged and artfully lit grittiness to Chuen (เฉือน, Slice), this gory-laden crime thriller by Kongkiat Komesiri, who wrote the script and shares cinematography credits. He's previously directed the boxing-underworld drama Muay Thai Chaiya and was a co-director of the Art of the Devil occult thriller series. The story is by Wisit Sasanatieng, who's previously scripted such Thai cinema classics as the ghost drama Nang Nak and Daeng Bireley's and Young Gangsters and directed such films as the cult western Tears of the Black Tiger and the satiric romantic comedy Citizen Dog. Slice is another that will be mentioned along with all those.

Though it's mostly set in contemporary times, Slice looks and feels much older, as if it's a lost social-message film out of the 1970s. But it is clearly a Thai film of 2009 and the Kingdom's newly enacted motion-picture ratings system. Free from the scissors and Vaseline of the censors, it has images that not even MC Chatrichalerm Yukol could have gotten away with in his social-message films of the '70s and '80s.

Slice takes a deliciously demented headlong dive into a pit of depravity, with a visit to a high-society orgy club, where everyone is slain. And there's a long gaze at the bare butt and air-brushed prison tats of Pe Arak. Rated 18+, the nudity and violence have been carefully calculated, with shadows covering up any offending full-frontal nudity or sex acts.

Arriving at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport at around 5 a.m., they check in to a hotel in the city. Suffering from jet lag, Dang wants to sleep, but her husband Wit is restless and heads down to the hotel bar to buy some cigarettes. While unpacking their luggage, Dang finds a small paper with a phone number of a woman named Noy, and she is immediately suspicious.
In the hotel bar, Wit meets Ploy, a young woman who says she is waiting for her mother to arrive from Stockholm. The two bond over coffee and cigarettes, and Wit then invites Ploy to come up to the hotel room, where she can take a shower and rest while she awaits her mother. Dang is seething with anger and jealousy. She has bouts of suspicion, followed by hallucinations/nightmares. Fitfully, the three people try to sleep. Dang and Wit discuss their seven-year marriage, and wonder why the love has gone out of it. Dang becomes more upset, and decides to leave. Wit wakes up to find Dang gone, and then he and Ploy sit and smoke cigarettes and talk about love and relationships.

Synopsis

A soldier named Keng, meets a young man named Tong in Thailand, the two begin a friendship. Keng makes constant sexual and amorous advances on Tong, who laughs them off, or makes a game out of them. He is never exactly interested, but never fully rebuffs either. The two make trips back and forth from the Jungle where Tong lives and Keng is on patrol with his military unit, to the city. We see the lush silent landscapes and the bustling city life, from dance hall karaoke to the cinema to the solitude of a quiet lake. When Keng finally makes a move in such a way, as to be beyond any doubt of a desire for intimacy (he kisses Tong's hands), Tong responds in turn by doing the same, and then walks into the darkness of the forest. Before Keng, can come to understand, the film takes a drastic turn in tone, style, and mood.

We are told by an interjected 3d person narrator the story of a shaman who is a shape-shifter known to take different animal forms, who used to roam the forest playing tricks on people. One day a cunning hunter, did not fall into a trick and shot him, mid transformation from woman into tiger. The spirit of the shaman was then stuck as half tiger half man and eternally doomed to stalk the forest; tricking and devouring all in it's path.

Keng, is then on patrol in his section of the forest, exploring rumors from villagers, about some "thing" killing cattle and causing general havoc. Alone on patrol in the woods, he becomes plagued by strange sounds, a sense of dread, and images of a naked boy, a tiger, spectral animals, and a glowing phosphorescent tree (which looks as beautiful as those in Aranofsky's "The Fountain"...I have no idea how they got that effect, on their budget, but it's miraculous...).

This second half of the film, of course calls into question our understanding of Keng and Tong's prior relationship (if Tong ever existed at all.). While part one, is reminiscent of a modern quirky love story like "Chungking Express", the second half is like Terrance Mallick shooting a remake of "Predator". All sense of time and space, is swallowed by the jungle, and implicit politics of the first half are turned inside out in the second half; it is literally cat and mouse, with the possibility that the cat may want to be eaten by the mouse, or vice versa.

The second half is also marked by the inclusion of tribal art and cave paintings, depicting the story of the shaman and the soldier, with sub-titles accompanying them. To paraphrase a description by director Weerasethakul it's like "a silent film for the first people on earth". And together with the visual effects, confident cinematography, clever use of editing, music, and sound, and disarming performances, it becomes magical. "Tropical Malady" combines the most modern and ancient notions of fear and desire, and makes something "new" out of them.

This is Thailand's "Solaris", a story of the changing shapes and forms of want and need, of being deceived and allowing yourself to be deceived by them. It's slow pace, forces reflection on questions like what form or body comprises love, is it purely physical or something more, is it perhaps deception itself, a fools errand we invent to forget the savagery of the jungle around us, is it the need to devour or be devoured? There's a Scottish legend called Tam Lin (one of my favorites), long story short, a woman falls in love with a faerie, and discovers he used to be a man, but made a deal with the faeries to serve them if they spared his life, after an accident. Tam tells the women she can restore his humanity and claim him, if when the faeries pass on Halloween night, she will wrap her arms around him and not let go no matter what happens. She does this, and the faeries transform him into all manner of creature, some hot, some cold, some thorny, others slimy, some which bite and claw, etc, but she holds on throughout all his changes, til eventually she finds herself just cradling a man. And the faeries begrudgingly let her keep him, because she held on to what she loved, despite the way it changed with time.

The film opens with these lines, "All of us are by nature wild beasts, our duty as human beings is to become like trainers, who keep their animals in check. And even teach them to perform tasks alien to their bestiality"-Tom Nakajima "Tropical Malady", is a good deal more ambiguous, I suspect more predatory and reflective as well, than Tam Lin, and comes from the opposite side of the world, but like that story manages to peculiarly harmonize emotional sensitivity and mythic scope, into a coherent whole.

I wished I would have paid more attention to Weerasethakul "Mysterious Object At Noon" the first time I had the chance, he has a talent for experimenting with narrative and style that is missing in many films endlessly praised these days. The phrase I kept hearing from other reviews or the one I liked the best was "If Brokeback Mountain, was a mountain on the island from "Lost"...it's callous, with a smidgen of truth, but this is a much better movie than that. It is very slow moving though, the first hour will give you no hint of the second half (other than a few visual ones, look at the various statues in the backgrounds, etc), but for the bold and the patient, there is lush hypnotic reward to be had.

Mysterious Object at Noon (2000) Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Mysterious Object at Noon (2000)
aka Dokfa nai meuman

Genre: Documentary | Mystery | Experimental
Director: Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Country: Thailand
Language: Thai
Subtitles: English (Hardcoded)
Aspect Ratio: Widescreen 1.66:1
Length: 84mn
File: Dvdrip Divx Avi - 384x256 - 29fps - 699mb

Description:
This film is an experimental mix of documentary and fiction. The film crew travels from the Thai countryside to Bangkok, asking the people they encounter along the way to continue a story about a handicapped boy and his teacher.

Part documentary part experimental narrative, Apichatpong Weerasethakul's MYSTERIOUS OBJECT AT NOON may occupy a genre all its own. Inspired by the Surrealist storytelling technique known as Exquisite Corpse, Mr. Weerasethakul roamed the Thai countryside interviewing people to contribute a line or perhaps a chapter to his narrative. What results is a film unlike any other, simultaneously a documentary about the people of Thailand's many villages and their surreal narrative, built one line at a time, that begins with a story about Dogfahr, a caring teacher who teaches a disabled boy and ends, quite literally, miles from there.

Blissfully Yours (2002) Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Blissfully Yours (2002) aka Sud sanaeha

Genre: Drama | Romance
Director: Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Country: Thailand
Language: Thai
Subtitles: English (.srt file)
Aspect Ratio: Widescreen 1.66:1
Length: 127mn
File: Dvdrip Xvid Avi - 432x272 - 25fps - 701mb

Description:
This second feature of Apichatpong Weerasethakul is more an experience than a story-dependent film. Something strange happens to your feeling for time while watching this two-hour long film: time seems suspended, absent. When 45 minutes into the film the opening credits suddenly appear, they come as a bit of a shock, because by then you are irresistibly drawn into the non-story.

The way this film treats time is reminiscent of several films by Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-Liang: long, drawn-out scenes, in real-time or almost, and with little or no dialogue. Also the relationship between the main characters brings to mind Tsai's films, more in particular 'Aiqing Wansui' with its triangular relationship.

'Blissfully Yours' is an impressionist rendering of a lazy afternoon in the mountainous border region between Thailand and Myanmar. Min is an illegal immigrant from Myanmar, who takes his girlfriend Roong for a pick-nick. They are joined later by Orn, an older woman employed by Roong to take care of Min.

One of the main ingredients in impressionism is the sun, and the sun plays an important though discrete role in this film also. It is present everywhere in the second part of the film, softly filtered through the canopy of the jungle, but also as a threat to Min who has a skin disease and was told to stay out of the sun.

What also filters through in the film is the political issue of Myanmarese immigrants in northern Thailand. The first half hour shows the three main characters consulting a doctor about Min's skin condition. Min, who has no papers, doesn't speak - perhaps because the doctor would refuse to treat him if she knew her patient was an illegal alien and not a Thai. And the doctor's refusal to give Min a 'fit-to-work' certificate unless he can produce official papers is typical of the administrative vicious circle so many illegal immigrants are caught in all around the world.

This makes for a stark contrast between the first and second part of the film, between grim reality and a dreamy, lazy afternoon that is bathed in light.

American audiences may feel uneasy seeing sex scenes that are neither censored, clinical, beautified or violent. Not recommended for viewers who require car chases and shoot-outs, or for those who don't like ants.
