Blokes (Block) (2010) - Marialy Rivas

Language: Spanish (English hard subs)
Country: Chile

  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1646960/

Santiago, Chile, 1986. Luchito, a 13-year-old boy, masturbates while he obsessively contemplates Manuel, his 16-year-old neighbor, whom he can see standing by a window in an adjacent project building. Oblivious of the gaze of his precocious voyeur, Manuel discovers his sexuality with girl from the neighborhood. The window turns into an erotic cinematographic world that awakens a curiosity in Luchito, with disastrous repercussions for Manuel.

From gaycelluloid.com:

At first this poignant short looks nothing more than the sweet tale of an innocent teenage crush. Namely the story of Chilean teen Luchito and that of his increasing obsession with the body of a slightly older youth who lives in the apartment block opposite his, forever to be had shining a light in the direction of his object of desire's bedroom window, in the hope of catching a glimpse of football loving Manuel naked, perhaps even in the middle of a sexual act itself.

Yet just as signals can be misinterpreted, so too can appearances be deceptive. For check out the country of origin, together with the year in which this piece is set, in this case 1986 and those knowledgeable of the life and times of then Chilean President General Augusto Pinochet, will be only too well aware as to what dramatic backdrop in the history of Santiago, this short is modelled on.

Complete with an up close and personal bus sequence, together with acts of stimulated masturbation, this work, based on a story by Pedro Lemebel, as written and directed by Marialy Rivas, is as much a history lesson on the often bloody times of Chile, as it is a tale of burgeoning adolescent sexuality. Need more be said?

Mater amatísima (Beloved Mother) (1980) - José Antonio Salgot

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081139/

Country: Spain
Language: Spanish

Victoria Abril has an early starring role in this domestic drama directed by José Antonio Salgot. She plays older than her real age as a single mother struggling to cope with an autistic child. Bigas Luna gets a credit for the story, and there's a lovely theme by Vangelis. It's a remarkable work which ought to be better known.

Clara’s son Juan is brain damaged at birth leaving him unable to communicate, and the doctors can do nothing but offer a place in an institution. Instead she abandons the father to set up home in a cramped and slovenly modern flat, gradually losing touch with family, work, and everything else but her son. The boy’s birthday was a turning point, his frustration at being unable to blow out the candles on his cake leading to a violent outburst, and the end of any pretence in the family that nothing is wrong.

In this study of alienation and withdrawal images of technology abound, through hospitals, the city, the workplace, right down to Juan’s toy robot. It’s an intense and claustrophobic piece of pure cinema, unlike anything I’ve seen before.

Carne de tu carne ( Flesh of Your Flesh) (1983) - Carlos Mayolo

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085299/

Country: Colombia
Language:  Spanish

This drama from South America seems at first sight to be one of those earnest tracts about the violent social and political situation prevailing throughout the continent in recent times, in this case specifically the Colombia of the 1950s. So the dedication to Roger Corman and Roman Polanski certainly raised my eyebrows!

In fact this is a compelling and eerie story of the forbidden love of a teenage brother and sister, interweaving ancient local legends in a style which can only be called “jungle gothic”. Strongly recommended for the more sophisticated fantasy fan.
