The legendary Shakespearean character Sir John Falstaff, the notoriously drunken, obese, and yet charming companion of the young Henry V, steps up from supporting character in several plays to the central focus of Orson Welles' Chimes at Midnight, considered by many critics the best of the director's acclaimed Shakespeare films. Welles held this film in high regard and considered it along with The Trial his best work. As he remarked in 1982: "If I wanted to get into heaven on the basis of one movie, that's the one I'd offer up." Many critics, including Peter Bogdanovich and Jonathan Rosenbaum, also consider it Welles's finest work.

Note on the Studio Canal edition: Probably due to an endless legal war over the rights of the film, Falstaff (Chimes at Midnight) has been rarely seen and exists today as bootleg or as poor quality DVD transfers. However, the film obviously underwent a complete restoration prior to 2005 and was released in France in a pristine DVD by Studio Canal. Sadly, this edition was quickly taken off the market soon after its release.

"Les Contrebandières, known in English as "The Smugglers", is a 1967 film by French director Luc Moullet; it was his second feature film.Two female smugglers decide to quit their illegal profession to enter into society and take a regular job. Despite their good intentions, they don't succeed. In “The Smugglers” a cunning customs officer (Johnny Monteilhet) working the border that divides two warring nations gets a nice system going by forcing his two attractive lady friends (Françoise Vatel and Monique Thiriet) to move contraband back and forth in equal proportion. In some ways the film echoes “Les Carabiniers,” a similarly stripped-down, cynical parable directed by Mr. Moullet’s close friend Jean-Luc Godard in 1963.

With “A Girl Is a Gun,” Mr. Moullet stepped up to color, widescreen and a star holding down the lead (Jean-Pierre Léaud, of Truffaut’s Antoine Doinel films). But this parody — less of American westerns than of their already self-conscious Italian counterparts, flourishing at the time the film was made — still makes comic hay of its pathetically reduced means. The action takes place in dusty mountain passages, where Billy the Kid (Mr. Léaud, in striped pants and long hair that give him a distinct hippie look) encounters an attractive female traveler (Rachel Kesterber) and enlists her as his mule, unaware that she has her own reasons for going along. Somehow the plot builds to a climax borrowed from King Vidor’s “Duel in the Sun” as the two protagonists wrestle in a cloud of dust.

The story opens with a violent clash between cops and criminals, in one of the most visually stunning shootouts committed to film in recent years. Professional thief, Yuen (Richie Ren), and his crew are interrupted during the completion of a heist, placing them in the sights of rogue cop, Cheung (Nick Cheung). When the news crews arrive and film the long shootout in the streets of Hong Kong, the public is outraged at the lack of preparation and protection from the police, and watch as the thieves make their escape. After the crew’s suspected hideout is revealed, bold, new police commissioner, Rebecca Fong (Kelly Chen) proposes that the police invite the media to film what should be a smooth takedown, in order to win back public approval. The events that follow lead both sides of the law into an unpredictable finale with the cameras rolling throughout.

 Summing up Sono's Love Exposure is a task I still do not think I am ready for even after two days of soaking it in after my viewing at NYAFF. Some of the many ideas the film dealt with in the 4 hour runtime included commentary on religion, cultism, perversion, growing up and coming of age, love, and life. The film tackles many of these heavy hitting themes and ideas with a sense of humor found very little in much of the mainstream fluff produced today. The balance of subtle often crude humor and darker, heavier, more dramatic aspects of the story really works well. Sono creates a product that can appeal to a wider base of people. There is something in this film for everyone from the people who enjoy the latest Will Ferrel production to the admirers of Bergman. With a rowdy packed house at the NY premiere at the festival the first two and a half hours are a riot and breeze by. There are points in the latter portion which start to drag a bit but never could I say I was bored with the film. The movie was well made with good cinematography, decent acting, and a great script with fully fleshed out characters. The director is able to create an effective commentary on religion, loneliness, Japanese society all the while mixing in a lot of body humor, up-skirt shots, and a few lesbian kissing scenes for good measure. Overall highly recommended, ignore the 4 hour runtime because it is the fastest 4 hour movie you will see. Ultimately a funny, sad, uplifting, and depressing movie all at the same time. - IMDB Comment
