Description:
A remake of Kinji Fukasaku's (Battle Royale, Tora Tora Tora) 1975 film of the same name. The basic plot is that a dishwasher ends up saving the life of a Yakuza boss when he knocks out an assassin that is shooting up his restaurant. The Yakuza boss thanks him by making him his right-hand man, but the dishwasher turns out to be pretty much a sociopath, showing no fear, regret, or capability for patience, thus resulting in a violent film full of miscommunication and misunderstandings. The best part is that none of the other characters really seem that willing to take him down, so his blunt approach to killing whoever he feels goes pretty much unchecked.

However, the movie is pretty slight on the plot. Really, it's more like a continuing cycle of prison-violence-heroin, prison-violence-heroin. If that description gives some pause, especially considering that this movie is over two hours long, have no fear--it's the most interesting cycle of prison-violence-heroin ever filmed, because one of Miike's primary strengths lies in his use of hyperbole.

A splashy, fun addition to Takashi Miike's eclectic film canon, this deliberately overblown live-action film version of a popular late-'70s anime TV show spoofs the very notion of mounting big-budget widescreen adaptations of animated kids' fare. Between adults' nostalgia for the trashy delights of the original skein and the lust of crazed juve fans for pretty-boy pop star Sho Sakurai (to judge from the screaming Asian tweens attending "Yatterman's" Gotham premiere), the pic should rock locally following its March 7 release. But constant in-jokes and ginned-up sexual suggestiveness make Stateside distribution improbable. Yatterman, as it turns out, to the linguistic bemusement of English-speaking viewers, is two people: Yatterman 1, aka Gan, a boy in blue (Sakurai) and Yatterman 2, aka Ai, a girl in pink (Saki Fukuda). Together with a canine robot dubbed (what else?) Yatterwoof, they protect the world from the evil Doronbow Gang, composed of sexy Lady Doronjo (Kyoko Fukada) and her two henchmen, rat-faced mechanical genius Boyacky (Katsuhisa Namase) and pig-faced strongman Tonzra (Kendo Kobayashi).

From an opening that finds Tokyo in spectacular shambles by the time the collective Yatterman arrives, Miike delights in subverting the series' conventions with such loving exactitude that even those unfamiliar with the TV show can readily figure out what's being joshed. Miike sometimes inserts tongue-in-cheek "explanations" via 2-D animation, such as an instructional cross-section cutaway of Yatterwoof's inner workings.

In contrast to the pumped-up f/x strategy deployed in, say, "Transformers," the big-eyed bots in "Yatterman" retain their status as toys, albeit tremendously oversized ones. The more hyperbolic this CGI extravaganza becomes, the more it keeps its kid-friendly brand of cheesiness, along with a loopy imaginativeness that is pure Miike.

The money-making scams that finance the villains' increasingly wild robotics are thematically coordinated, so the peddling of discount wedding dresses (modeled by Doronjo) breeds the giant "Bridesmaidiot," with gun turrets for nipples. The sale of giant sushi yields a tentacle-swinging "Spencer the Squid," with attendant guppy warriors.

Miike has considerably amped up the sexual content, a la "Austin Powers," whether through grotesque inanity (warring megarobots of opposite genders, overcome by passion, get it on in a clinch of crunching metal) or in the pubescent libido of its straight-arrow hero (flinging aside his faithful No. 2, Yatterman 1 buries his head between the thighs of a damsel in distress, ostensibly to suck the poison out of a scorpion bite). Indeed, erstwhile repressed desire throbs everywhere.

But despite the stunningly idiotic gags, the dingbat musical numbers and dazzling color schemes, the pic's repetitive episodic structure ultimately trumps Miike's parody of it, and becomes wearisome after a while. Relentlessly cacophonous soundtrack matches the nonstop visual onslaught.

Seven years after the death of his wife, company executive Aoyama is invited to sit in on auditions for an actress. Leafing through the resumés in advance, his eye is caught by Yamazaki Asami, a striking young woman with ballet training. On the day of the audition, she's the last person they see. Aoyama is hooked. He notes her number from her file, calls her and takes her to dinner. He hesitates to call again, worried that he'll seem too eager. When he does, Asami knowingly lets the phone ring for some time before answering. She's alone in her darkened room - alone, that is, apart from the writhing victim she has tied up in a sack on the floor...

One of the scariest films I have ever seen. One of those beautifully lensed horror films that mixes surreal and reality to perfection. The film starts off as almost a romantic film, and throws you down a rabbit hole of betrayal, gore, and fear. If you have ever been single, and had an interest in meeting girls on the internet, this film is very prevalent to todays society. If you have the right patience to watch this film, you will come out very satisfied, but one major complaint from most viewers is that the film was too slow. It is without a doubt the directors intention to slow down the pacing and get the viewers more involved. Overall I would suggest anyone and everyone who has ever been lonely at one point in their life to take a look at this horrific masterpiece of a film.

Description
This movie is the first of Miikes triad society trilogy, and the trilogy kicks of to a great start. The movies in the trilogy are only connected thematically, and these themes are actually apparent in all his films, if you look close enough. Shinjuku Triad Society is about a cop trying to prevent his kid brother from getting too involved with a rather extreme gang of outsiders, struggling their way to the top of Tokyos yakuza. The kid brother is a lawyer, and the triad gang is becoming increasingly in need of one, as the movie progresses. The movie takes place in a very harsh environment, and is therefore pretty violent and tough. Miike has done worse, but since this is a serious movie it hits you very hard. As usual there is also a lot of perverted sex, mostly homosexual in this one. The movie is in many ways a typical gangster movie, but with a great drive and true grittiness. If you've only seen Miikes far-out movies (Ichi the killer, Fudoh etc.) this is worth checking out since it is sort of a compromise between his aggressive over-the-top style displayed in those movies and his more serious side, as seen in the other films of the trilogy. And as always with Miike, there are at least two scenes in this that you'll NEVER forget (see it and figure out which ones for yourself).

Description
Three friends graduate school after playing a prank on and robbing their teacher. One, the fire-hearted Riichi, basically drives the drama as a young man who doesn't fully understand himself and expresses himself with violence and a domineering attitude. After he breaks up with his long-time girlfriend, the people who love and care for Riichi have to grow up and take care of themselves while looking out for Riichi, who spirals through depression and passivity as he is finally confronted with life in the real world.

Despite the title and the mean-looking cover art, Young Thugs: Innocent Blood is one of Miike's gentlest and sweetest films. That's not to say that it is entirely free of nastiness. The protagonists spend a lot of their free time getting into violent brawls. But the story is one of friendship and romance. The film follows four friends, three guys and a girl, as they exit high school. As time goes on, and as new romantic relationships arise, the friends grow apart. It's kind of like Take Care of My Cat, except for every once in a while someone gets beaten with an aluminum baseball bat. It's actually quite touching, and frequently very funny. The climactic event in the film is extremely goofy in a way that only Miike could accomplish – it's not quite on the level as the end of Dead or Alive 1, but it's something you're guaranteed not to see outside of this man's filmography.
