Witold Leszczynski - Konopielka aka Ko-no-piel-ka (1982)

An adaptation of a novel by Edward Redlinski and a grotesque on country life. A peasant called Kaziuk leaves one morning to collect brushwood. When he comes back everything seems to be radically different. His cow has calved prematurely – which brings bad luck. What is more, he sees a wondering beggar, a young teacher and a party activist at his home. The activist wants to build a school and an electricity line, because the peasants enjoy poor hygiene and live in superstition. Kaziuk understands little of it, but remains impressed. This is the last film in the trilogy that began Andrzej Wajda's career as a director. Preceding this wartime drama are Pokolenie (1955) and Kanal (1957). Once again, Wajda presents a strong anti-war statement, this time in the personae of two men who are given orders on the last day of World War II in Poland to murder a leading communist. The orders come from the part of the resistance that opposes the new communist regime. One of Wajda's favorite performers and a friend, Zbigniew Cybulski, plays the man who eventually pulls the trigger and kills the communist leader -- and the results are not what he expected. In 1959, Popiol I Diament won in competition at the British Academy Awards and at the Venice Film Festival.

Description:

The forty-something Leon who used to be with special forces is now an alcoholic after his wife left him. He gets a call to meet a mobster who's looking for a bodyguard. When he arrives the mobster refuses to hire him because he can tell he's an alcoholic, but when he saves his life a few minutes later, the gangster is very appreciative and gives Leon the job. He's not hired to protect the gangster, but the gangster's 16-year-old daughter, Sara. At first she is annoyed by him and is rebellious and won't cooperate with him, but when he saves her life and takes a bullet for her, she falls in love with him. She makes advances towards him telling him she wants him to be her man. Naturally he refuses her at first because he knows her father would kill him. Eventually he gives in and they become secret lovers. They're in love but how long can they continue their relationship before her father finds out? And what will he do when he finds out?

There is one scene where people are in the air with poles stuck up them, the poles are almost a couple stories high. (Hard to describe but think of the impalement scene in Cannibal Holocaust 100 ft. in the air) The movie has some of the most amazing cinematography and insane camera angles. Fan's of directors like Jodorowsky, Tarkovsky and David Lynch won't be disappointed.

FOUR NIGHTS WITH ANNA tells the darkly humorous story of a crematorium worker named Leon (Artur Steranko), a quiet loner who fears having to interact with another person. Apparently Leon has served jail time, though the reasons for this aren't fully explained. When he sets eyes on his beautiful neighbor, Anna (Kinga Preis), an infatuation is born, to the point where he sneaks into her apartment at night to be closer to her. As the nights progress, it becomes evident that Leon might not have purely evil intentions, and when the truth comes out about his connection to Anna, he must face the truth--and lies--about his past. FOUR NIGHTS WITH ANNA is a bleak comedy--so bleak, at times, that it feels like a straight drama--and Skolimowski uses this mischievous tone to flirt with viewer expectations. At times, Leon seems like the most innocent character in movie history. At others, he appears on the verge of committing a horrific crime. This back-and-forth makes the film feel like a thriller as well, adding another genre to the mix. Director of photography Adam Sikora's haunting and painterly imagery is the perfect complement to Skolimowski and Ewa Piaskowska's clever script, making for a welcome return by the Polish master.

Filled with elaborate set-pieces and philosophical dialogue the world imagined by Bruno Schultz is truly one of its kind. The sleazy shots of half-naked women are a nice touch and the glimpse into Jewish culture is fascinating. A must-see for fans of bizarre and unusual cinema. The wax mannequins sequence is stunningly beautiful.
