Description: Shake, Rattle & Roll is a Filipino horror film series dating back to 1984. It is currently produced by Regal Films. Most of the series are official entries for the Metro Manila Film Festival with the exception of the sixth installment which premiered in January 1997. The title is solely based on the song of the same name.

This horror film franchise which is currently owned by Regal Films is known to be the only film series in the Philippines with the most movie installments. The first installment was released under the defunct Athena Productions while all the succeeding series are produced by Regal Entertainment. As of 2009, there are eleven installments of the movie series, with the latest being premiered in December 2009.

The first-ever installment of the movie premiered in December 1984 under Athena Productions. It composes of three stories, Baso, Pridyider, and Manananggal. This type of Film series, which involves three stories in one movie paved the way for movies like Regal Shocker (Regal Films), Takbo, Talon, Tili! (Seiko Films), and Magandang Hatinggabi (Star Cinema). This first release is most known for its scarier scenes and suspense-filled drama.

The film is known for its mysterious horror genre, very much dark in context, compared to the succeeding series wherein the horror texture is lighter, and in some series like in Shake, Rattle & Roll 7, comedy progresses in the scenes. Copies of the first installment of the movie series are very rare, since Athena Productions no longer exists.

Actress Janice de Belen starred in an episode of the series in the first four installments.



Three friends, Paolo (Rey Abellana), Girlie (Arlene Muhlach) and Johnny (Joel Torre) decided to play "spirit of the glass" in an old abandoned house. They contact three restless spirits from the Spanish era: Juanito, Ibarra and Isabela. When the glass breaks, the spirits inhabit their bodies and begin reliving these spirits' past. It turns out they all died of a love triangle of their own making. A vow of revenge has now poured onto the present.

Douglas (Herbert Bautista) is a teenager in a faraway province. A manananggal is said to live within the vicinity and is out to eat people. He is given the task by his grandmother (Mary Walter) to kill the creature. Having found a way to prevent it from rejoining to the other half of her body, he must now survive the night to protect his family from the creature's ferocious attacks. This story is one of the most popular and suspenseful episodes of the entire series. Herbert Bautista's role won him the Best Actor award at the 1984 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Autohystoria is described as a collection of digitalized memories of both reality and dreams. Description: A young married couple, Maria and Jose (Rosa Rosal and Tony Santos) start life together creating a lanzones orchard in the countryside. Four children are born to the couple - Miguel (Leroy Salvador), Arturo (Carlos Padilla Jr), Angelita (Marita Zobel), and Lito (Danilo Jurado). The eldest, Miguel, is a deaf-mute.

Life is good to them and the children grow up and bring joy to the community. But trouble enters their lives when Jose incurs the enmity of Bruno (Joseph de Cordova). Bruno, a widower, is much feared in the village, for it is rumored that he caused the death of his wife. And yet he wants to remarry and is courting Choleng (Mila Ocampo), Jose's niece. But Choleng avoids Bruno like the plague and one day, in trying to get away from Bruno, Choleng slips and falls off a cliff and dies

The village is outraged and Bruno hides in the mountains. There, he plots his revenge on the village, particularly on Jose's family. He finds his chance one day when Angelita brings food to her father and brother Arturo while they work in the field. He ambushes the young girl and rapes her. Jose, with the help of the entire village, hunts him down but is shot down in cold blood by Bruno.

Meanwhile, Arturo's mind is preoccupied by the possibilities of life in the city. He dislikes working in the field, while his deaf-mute brother, Miguel, is hardly any help and instead courts a pretty village girl, Gloria (Carmencita Abad). Arturo goes to Manila, dreaming of unimagined riches, but suddenly he returns and he is not alone. A typical Manila hussy is with him, all made up and contemptuous of provincial life. Arturo does not have the riches he promised and instead asks his mother to mortgage their rice fields, which she does. Arturo returns to Manila.

Bruno, in the meanwhile, is not through with Maria's family, and now desires Angelita even more. He flees to another town where a greedy landowner (Mario Roldan) hires him to destroy the potentially rich lanzones harvest that Maria's family has waited twenty years for.

One dark night, Bruno and his men start their work but the family is ready and the entire village comes to their rescue. Miguel, the deaf-mute, being the only man left in the family, faces Bruno bravely and kills the bandit.

Arturo, the prodigal son, returns, alone this time and penniless, begging for forgiveness. Unforgiving at first, Miguel, refuses to take him back. But Maria brings about a reconciliation of the two brothers. Peace returns to the family once more and in spite of Jose's absence, Maria realizes that life indeed must go on. They reap the fruits and blessings of their bountiful land.

Biyaya ng Lupa won the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) award for Best Picture in 1959, as well as Best Story for Celso Al. Carunungan. It gained international fame at the Asian Film Festival in 1960 held in Tokyo when Leroy Salvador won the award for Best Supporting Actor.

The career of Manuel Silos spans several decades from the 1920s, when he and his brothers made silent movies, to the late 50s when he was most active. In his youth he was an actor and a comedian, trained in bodabil (vaudevile), whose stage and screen name was Sano Tulia. He was best with light romantic comedies, like Victory Joe (1946), Puppy Love (1956), and Tuloy ang Ligaya (1958). He was technically proficient and did mos t of his special effects on camera. Biyaya ng Lupa was a milestone in his career, for he is best remembered for this film, a serious rural melodrama, a genre he rarely tackled. He was the recipient of the Natatanging Gawad Urian in 1979, and the Film Academy of the Philippines honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1985.

Nena Ojeda (Lorena)Inday Lorenzo (Asensio),Jo, and Viring try to deny the realities of war by preserving their pre-war lifestyle of playing mahjong and engaging in other activities enjoyed by women of their station. Pining for her dead fiancé, Margarita goes through bouts of melancholy. Miguel and Trinidad turn from naughty children into impetuous adults.



As the Japanese forces advance close enough to Hacienda Lorenzo,the families move to the Lorenzo's forest lodge after a frantic escape from Hacienda Lorenzo. A group of weary guerrillas(whose members are familiar faces; friends of Don Claudio) arrive and Jo tends to their injuries. The guerrillas leave Hermes Mercurio (Lazaro) behind.After getting a lesson in sex education from Jo, Trinidad decides to lose her virginity to Mercurio. Miguel endures more comments of the "Mama's Boy"kind when he fails to take action against a Japanese soldier who came upon the girls bathing in the river. It is Mercurio who kills the Japanese soldier. Margarita comforts Miguel, who decides to learn marksmanship from Mercurio. Meanwhile, Viring's jewelry, which she considers her best friends, is stolen by Melchor (de la Cruz), Inday's trusted foreman. He justifies his action as a reward for his services. He tries to break the other servants' loyalty, but they force Melchor to leave.



Later, Melchor, along with a band of thieves return. They systematically kill all the servants, one of them Melchor's own son. They gather the women in the living room, where they subject them to all sorts of atrocities: First, Viring's fingers are chopped off with a bolo to obtain rings that she had refused to give. After being offended by a slap from Inday, he takes Inday to a room and repeatedly beats and rapes her, his noble-born former mistress. He kills his wife, who enters the room after learning that Melchor has killed his own son. Nena is forced to play a complex combination of Russian Roulette and Mahjong with the bandits.



While treating Melchor's wounds, and that of her companions, Jo notices him eying the young Trinidad. Although Melchor agrees with Jo to not take the young heiress, Trining willingly goes with the bandits anyway, despite all the crimes they have committed against her family.The bandits notice that two members of the families are missing: Miguel and Margarita. After a romantic tryst the night before that had driven Trining crazed from jealousy, the two heard the bandits' arrival and hid.

After the violent bloodbath only days before,Miguel urges the survivors to resume their mahjong games to help them cope.The women are resilient, and fall back on their old habits of idle gossipping and Mahjong.



Miguel is determined to hunt the bandits down and bring Trinidad back. He catches them in their hideout,an old hospital in the city, where the robbers boast of their adventures:raping wealthy young heiresses in their homes, killing their former haciendero overlords, and robbing them of their prized possessions.His courage is replaced with bloodlust,however driving him to a killing spree. In the hospital is a woman believed by Don Claudio to be the Spirit of the Mountain, but in reality, simply an unhinged woman in a party dress subjected to sexual assaults from the bandits. Miguel kills her to cap his carnage, and also as an act of mercy.



An epilogue follows the violent climax. The combined United States & the Philippine Commonwealth troops have liberated the Philippines from Japan. A party is held in the Ojeda home to announce Margarita and Miguel's betrothal.It is revealed that Margarita's ex-fiance, Ramon, actually survived the Fall of Corregidor,but is now reduced to a pathetic invalid,dressed in an army uniform, planted on his wheelchair.He sheds a tear for his now lost love. After witnessing the atrocities of the war, Don Claudio's mind has become unstable, and add to that, he has finally fallen to the curse of senility. He could not recognize his granddaughter, or anyone for that matter. Trinidad has made a new image for herself as a pernicious but very virginal young woman. The survivors attempt to reclaim their previous lifestyle, but the war has changed the world, just as it has forever marked each of them. The film ends with a quote from Trinidad about the very subject.
