Haskovy povidky ze stareho mocnarstvi AKA Hasek's Tales from The Old Monarchy (1952)

Four of Hasek's short stories were adapted for the screen by Miroslav Hubacek. They mostly satirize corruption and bureaucracy of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and hypocrisy of state officials.


1. Polévka pro chudé děti (Soup for Poor Children)
Prince Robert decides to continue with a family tradition and do a good deed - make soup for the poor children. He solemnly peels the first potato, and leaves the rest of the cooking to the policeman Pazourek. Pazourek sends for the brandy and falls asleep. The children take advantage of Pazourek sleeping to do some mischief, which might cause some very unpleasant surprise for the prince when he returns.

2. Schůze obecního zastupitelstva v Mejdlovarech (Municipal Administration Meeting)
Three candidates reached the last round of the job contest for the job of a local copper: the shepherd, the parish clerk and the stone-mason. All three bribe the Council members with beer and geese. There is no clue how to choose the copper, until the deputy asks candidates to slap the chairman.

3. Trampoty pana Tenkráta (Mr. Tenkrat's Troubles)
Matylda, the daughter of a high official, has to get married. But they must find her a husband first, as Mr Syrovátko, with whom Matylda spent the night, is married. The official's choice falls on his shy subordinate Mr Tenkrát. At first he is glad to be promoted, but when he realizes the situation, he manages to leave before the wedding.

4. Vzpoura trestance Šejby (Rebellion of Convict Sejba)
Regional Councilor comes to the prison to carry out an inspection. He wishes to see how church services are done, however convict Sejba refuses to do the altar boy, because he doesn't received a promised dumpling. While the Councilor is diverted by abundant refreshment, chaplain tries to persuade Sejba by offering him bread. Then he explains that he can't stand bread anymore, for he was sentenced for a theft of a single loaf of bread.

There are still water spirits among us. One group lives in Prague, led by Mr. Wassermann, who is using his wife's family as a servants. All they need is their old house near the river. But the house is to be demolished. They have to stop it. And the only way is to drown Dr. Mrácek, who is responsible for the demolition. But he falls in love with Wassermann's niece Jana. He changes to fish, is mistaked for water spirit from Germany, is drowned and revived again. The other problem is the flour with ears... and so on...

Review:
Documentary look at doomed male prostitutes in Prague, ages 15 to 18, who troll at the public swimming pool, the train station, a video arcade, and a disco. After the boys talk about how they got in the game, the camera follows them to the home of Pavel Rousek. Under the name Hans Miller, he makes gay porno videos, primarily for German distribution. Intercut with a movie shoot chez Rousek is an interview that follows him to his day job at a morgue, where he performs an autopsy as he talks about his work. The sex is without protection; the boys are without family. They talk about their bodies and souls, money, their sexual orientation, AIDS, their dreams, and death.

Synopsis: The film is based on the early stories by the outstanding Soviet writer Maxim Gorky. A young man follows his father's footsteps and joins the railway company, where he learns the job and has his first affair. Set in the country, during the German occupation.

Portrays WWII in a way that only 1966 could provide. Quirky, erotic and bubbling at the seams with subtle sexual innuendos throughout, Closely Watched Trains is difficult to classify. Placing a genre on the film would be insulting, it's every part comedy for it is drama. I couldn't help but get the feeling that being male I could identify with aspects of the male characters more so than a female watcher may. But then again, I think either could enjoy it, either a male noticing traits in the male characters in himself or a female realizing what she has had to deal with. Either way it's a great film and completely unlike anything I have ever seen. It has that comedy appeal that you can't always quite place your finger on, but has you laughing out loud. The juxtaposition of the absurd and pubescent will make anyone cringe with delight. I recommend this to anyone at any stage in life. Watch it with your kids, it will do them good. It's funny to think that the young awkwardness lingering through this film is still very much the same for the teenage boy. You would think that sexuality discussion in the media would have peaked long past the 70's heydays...

This is an updated version of Jonathan Swift's classic symbolic social and political satire Gulliver's Travels. Gulliver (Lubomir Kostelka) wakes up in Balnibarbi after being involved in a car crash. Floating over Balnibarbi is the mysterious country Laputa, and Gulliver tries to go there when he hears it is a better place. After running over a rabbit dressed in human clothing, he takes the creature's watch and finds it runs backwards, whereupon a peasant comments that at least the watch runs.

This motion picture tells us about the special trip of a very special gentleman named Pan Gulliver who was really surprised finding a rabbit Oscar on the road, wearing the checked shirt with the short trousers. Two minutes later we learn about the Balnebard's country where the people keep silent one day a week sparing the air, where there is an immortal poet living on the railway-station.This strange surreal world where black is white and white is black is headed by a king who is working now as a doorman in Monte-Carlo. Now there is only one person living in the castle - Prince Milevin - who's got nothing except excessive consumption of all the castle's wine-storage. A great cameraman's and director's work. They perfectly created the specific space of Balnebards's terrarium.

Description:
Two students from the Czech Film Academy commission a leading advertising agency to organize a huge campaign for the opening of a new supermarket named Czech Dream. The supermarket however does not exist and is not meant to. The advertising campaign includes radio and television ads, posters, flyers with photos of fake Czech Dream products, a promotional song, an internet site, and ads in newspapers and magazines. Will people believe in it and show up for the grand opening?

Everyone with any opinion about advertising (which, in this hyper-mediated world, is pretty much anyone) has at LEAST a half-aware understanding of the ability of advertising to affect their lives. Czech Dream is a movie about just that, as two student filmmakers design an ad campaign for a product that doesn't even exist, a hypermarket (which is, from what I saw in the movie, sort of a mix between a wholesale market and a supermarket) that advertises its opening day by saying such things as, "Don't come!" and "Don't spend!" Two thousand people arrive anyway.

This documentary is most effective in its complete simplicity. The filmmakers and crew take no time trying to hide their judgment or view from the movie--you can even see the mics, lighting set ups, other cameramen, and so on--because the idea here is NOT to create a so-called objective documentary but to show much more directly and personally the power of advertising over people. This power is something everyone perceives, but not as many people really believe in, until something like this occurs and two thousand people are left on a field with nothing in it but a banner.

Czech Dream is full of wonderful details. Vit and Filip spend little time detailing the actual process, focusing more on the message that the ads are trying to create, and allows most of the film's time to settle on people's comments about it. The self-serving dialog of the advertisers ("Oh, I think this is a horrible thing, but we're professionals and so we'll do it. It's like a doctor who has to save a rapist" "I like being an advertiser, you know, I like going out with my friends and knowing that I am the one that moves the world" "Filmmakers lie, advertisers don't lie") is well foiled by the reactions of the crowd of people who actually arrived, whose opinions range from "Hey, I know what this is, this is two people trying to get us outside for once! Let's have a picnic!" to "I'm going to take you to court for this!" and who, amazingly, take very little time in connecting the event to its political meaning (one that the filmmakers didn't really intend).

Synopsis: Tobruk is a 2008 film written and directed by Václav Marhoul and starring Jan Meduna and Petr Vanek. It is an adaptation of the classic American Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane. It transfers the action to North Africa during the Second World War.
It is the story of Jiri and Jan, two Czech soldiers, battling alongside the allied forces against the Germans, during World War II in Tobruk, Libya. Jiri Pospichal, eighteen years old, signs up as a volunteer in the Czechoslovak army. His naive ideas about heroism are rawly confronted with the hell of the African desert, complicated relationships in his unit and the ubiquitous threat of death. All this takes its cruel toll in the shape of his gradual loss of self respect and courage.

"In Hezké chvilky bez záruky (English title: Pleasant Moments), acclaimed director Věra Chytilová manages to make profound statements on the nature of humanity with such a striking concealment that most viewers won’t even notice them. It’s a continuation of her post-New Wave career.

In this film Chytilová focuses on the crackers. As the film opens, our heroine, the psychologist Hana (Jana Janěková) shouts obscenities into her dashboard as she deals with heavy traffic, already late for work. This is possibly the most dramatic scene in the film, reaching its zenith with Hana abruptly changing lanes, and culminating in a minor fender bender where…the other driver kicks her car a couple times and drives away. In most films, scenes like this are used as character development; here, these scenes comprise the entire film as Chytilová eschews characters, and development, and any kind of traditional story. It’s quite brilliant; look at all of the problems in the world, and yet, what do we really care about?

The bulk of the film is a series of vignettes featuring Hana interacting with a multitude of patients, all of which have their own personal problems: a woman fears she can see the future, a man can’t stop rubbing up against strangers, etc. A woman is physically abused by her husband, but can’t bring herself to leave him; enough story for an entire film, but here, dramatically flat and quickly forgotten: Hana can’t help the patient unless she is willing to help herself, nor can the film itself intervene. No, here more drama unfolds when Hana makes steak for dinner – when she knows her husband (Igor Bareš) will not be there. That says more about their relationship than a slap after the husband suggests a threesome with another woman. The slap is expected; the steak must be interpreted. The husband eventually leaves – blink and you’ll miss it; by the time he leaves it’s an afterthought. It’s the little things leading up to it that matter.

Another patient, Eva (Jana Krausová) compliments Hana after she puts on some makeup for the first time in the film. A passing comment, nothing more, but perhaps more important to Hana than a murder or attempted suicide – for the rest of the movie, she’s wearing makeup in almost every scene. Eva, a gallery owner, has her own story in which she falls in love with her son’s friend. Tension emerges between Eva and her son (David Kraus, real-life son of Jana Krausová), but we side with Hana – if they’re happy together, what’s the problem? The scenes between Eva and her son seem forced – dramatically flat – until we realize that’s the point. The son seems more upset that his mother and friend are cooking together than sleeping together. The real tension is in the small details; we just hide them in the big picture. The final scene is perfect: a patient recalls to Hana a near-rape in a rowboat on the Vltava river, under the National Theater, where she seems more concerned that the president may have bore witness. Hana laughs as she now realizes how ridiculous all of it is, what we really care about. The laugh turns to a cry in a final freeze-frame.

The film is shot in an almost gonzo-realist fashion by cinematographer Martin Štrba; handheld all the way, with constant repositioning and use of the zoom lens. Offbeat music from David Kraus is sparsely, and effectively, used throughout."

A true Czech classic. After the fall of communism in the Czech Republic a lumberjack in a small Czech village inherits a lot of money and properties (all of these was taken from his father after the War). How will Bohus manage this new situation? The very best comedy (?) I've ever seen, very highly recommended!

Since 1989, fans of Czech cinema have been keeping their eyes on, not, as you might think, a new generation of young directors, but instead the names who shot to fame in the liberal interlude of the Prague Spring. Stifled for twenty years many of them are now taking advantage of the freer political atmosphere, not to mention the attention, to leave off where their success was curtailed. Among them is Vera Chytilova, whose "feminist black comedy" Pasti, pasti, pasticky (Traps, 1998) was on show at the 42nd London Film Festival.

The title Traps in English creates few resonances, but in Czech it's a very different story. The form of Pasti, pasti, pasticky's Czech title occasionally leads to the film being artlessly translated as Traps, Traps, Little Traps or rather more imaginatively as All the Little Traps. But the Czech title is in fact a pun on a children's nursery rhyme, "Paci, paci, pacicky" (Hands, hands, little hands), which is usually recited with the aid of actions, not unlike "Pat a cake, pat a cake, baker's man" in English.

This may be a black comedy but it is no feminist black comedy. Beyond the pluck of the film's first half-hour, Chytilova seems unsure about what her message is and sends conflicting signals to the viewer. In the second half of the film, showing Lenka's inability to control the consequences of her actions, contradicts the first half of the film, in which Chytilova implicitly approves of Lenka's gonad-removing antics.

This is also the view of the film's marketing. The poster and the cover of the recently released video for the film show a photomontaged shot of Lenka standing aggressively over the pair wielding a hefty knife, whilst they stare forlornly at their recently detached goolies (not in-shot, I might add). Indeed, the whole selling-point of the film is that it is about a woman who cuts off her attackers' most treasured anatomical possessions.

Quite what all this is meant to say about how Chytilova feels women should react to male harassment, or even attack, is unclear. If anything the film's message is depressingly reactionary - don't resist them, even if you do you'll end up worse off. I suspect that Chytilova was aiming for a satire of society as a man's world, but she is far too affectionate towards male culture. The fact that her smutty toilet humour is so masculine discounts the possibility that the affection is ironic.

Chytilova even seems to have some sympathy with Dohnal's need to rape a woman. Following on in the grand old Czech tradition of using a protagonist's name to comment on his or her character, Chytilova names her violating anti-hero Dohnal. This is a common Czech surname but derived, or at least having the appearance of being derived, from the verb dohnat, meaning to be driven into doing something. (The word lacina, incidentally, means cheap.) This would seem to imply that Chytilova believes that her rapist did not act out of his own volition but had the deed forced on him by his sexual dissatisfaction with his wife. For a feminist, this is nothing short of a cop-out.

Pepe is the playboy of the bunch: despite having a lovely girlfriend, he finds a way to have sex with as many women as possible. His buddies from time to time exchange girlfriends with him. Though they are by no means the lothario he is, they do quite enough bed-hopping to get into trouble. When it becomes obvious that Pepe has gotten AIDS, his buddies, afraid for themselves, get mean.
