Genre crossing, challenging and freaky, it also taps into some big themes about Australian identity and paranoia.

''The Plumber'' was apparently based on a real-life incident that happened to friends of Weir’s living in London. In many regards, ''The Plumber'' is a film about social boundaries. About how people can be too polite to say no and then before they know it, someone who does not recognize the same boundaries they do has trodden over the limits of politeness into the intrusive. In some places, ''The Plumber'' was reviewed as a horror film, but more than anything it feels like the surreal escalations of one of Eugene Ionescu’s absurdist plays.

What starts out as an innocuous film turns into something far more sinister. The conclusion is awesome.

The story begins innocently enough - despite such ominous shots as that of the plumber's black-gloved hand pressing an elevator button - when this bedraggled longhair arrives at the door and persuades the young wife (Judy Morris) that her bathroom needs fixing. Soon, though, she suspects there may be something amiss. Strange noises are coming from the bathroom, the sound of someone singing. She begins to suspect the plumber may be taking a shower.

The Cars That Ate Paris is a 1974 Australian film. Directed by Peter Weir, it was his first feature film. Shot mostly in the rural town of Sofala, New South Wales, the film is set in the fictional town of Paris in which most of the inhabitants appear to be directly, or indirectly, involved in profiting from the results of car accidents. There are also themes of youth unemployment and old values vs new values and trying to cling to an unreal past in an Australia that never existed.

Valentine’s Day of 1900 in New South Wales, Australia. A classful of girls from the Appleyard girls boarding school go to nearby Hanging Rock for a picnic. Four girls ignore orders and sneak away to climb the Rock. Only one of the girls returns, screaming. The other three and a teacher, who was last seen in her underwear, have vanished completely. An extensive search of the area is conducted but no trace of the girls can be found. Parents withdraw their children from the school, causing its finances to plummet. The son of a wealthy British family, who saw one of the girls just before she vanished, becomes obsessed with finding her. He searches on his own and later finds one of the girls, who is found to have been sexually interfered with and her memory a blank.

The film opens with a montage of scenes of daily life in Australia in the 1970s: a rural school in the desert, the main street of an outback town, a traffic jam in the city, all being affected by unusually adverse weather conditions that suddenly appear. Only the local Aboriginals seem to recognize the cosmological significance of these weather phenomena. During one of these "freak rainstorms" in Sydney, an altercation occurs among a group of Aboriginals in a pub, which results in the mysterious death of one of them. At the coroner's inquest, the unexplained death is ruled a homicide and four men are accused of murder. Through the Australian Legal Aid system, a lawyer is procured for their defence. The circumstances by which he was contacted and retained are unusual, in that his law practice is corporate taxation and not criminal. He nonetheless takes on the case, and immediately his professional and personal life begin to unwind.

This supernatural Peter Weir thriller is truly one of the most haunting and fascinating movies ever seen. Richard Chamberlain does his best performance here as the Australian lawyer who defends a group of young Aborigins accused of murder. As he gets closer on the case, he discovers more about the main defendant, Chris, and not least about himself. Chris tells him that he is a Mulkurul, which appear to be a race of supernatural beings that lived in Australia thousands of years ago. At the same time, extraordinary high rainfall seems to confirm the Aboriginal prophecy of the coming of the LAST WAVE, the one that will drown the world.

The dream sequences and the supernatural effects enhance this movie and make it a spectacular experience. Olivia Hamnett and David Gulpilil are solid in the supporting roles, as well as the chap with the difficult name who plays Charlie, the old Aborigin who can turn into an owl. The climax and the ending don't disappoint, in contrast to many other supernatural thrillers who fall flat after a promising hour or so. However, this can not be called a pure thriller. It is a drama as well and talks about spirituality and spiritual identity in the modern world. A masterful work by Peter Weir, the master of visually stunning dramas.
